• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!
  • WE ARE MOVING THE LES PAUL FORUM TO A NEW HOSTING PROVIDER OVER THE NEXT 5-10 DAYS. We will experience downtime during that period. Please be patient and have confidence that we will return! Many thanks, Mike Slubowski, Admin

My neighbor, retired Air Force guy, just gave me a half dozen 5V6 GT tubes. Are they good for anything? Probably can't use them as 6V6 replacements, right? He told me they were never used (NOS) and thought that they probably used them on B-52s and KC 135s. He said those planes were full of tube technology as they withheld the circuits better if they were under nuclear threat. Pretty weird stuff, huh?

The 5 at the beginning indicates they need a 5V filament supply. W/o looking them up, that says rectifier to me but, again, I didn't look that tube up.

The 5v6 is a beam pentode, identical to a 6v6 except for the heater voltage which as DrewB says is 5v (4.7v to be precise). The only way to use them in place of a 6v6 would be to modify the heater supply in the amp to supply them with the correct voltage, running them at 6.3v would almost certainly burn the heaters out fairly quickly.
