i dunno????
he said she said,,,???,,,
im new here and i dont want to step on anyones toes but the lee jackson shit is 1st class!
not the ampeg stuff,,,,,,amped used cheap shit and whored out the design.......im talkin metaltronix and lee jackson brand tube amps!!!
they rock!!!!!
i know tone!
they had shit in them amps that people are raving about now with the new stuff like bogner, thd, and others!
ceramic tube sockets/heavy custom trannies/built in "hotplate" style attennuators/5 preamp tubes/switchable output tube biasing/ and goes from plexi to van halen to zakk balls ,balls, balls,,,and not to mention clarity in band situations where your tone doesnt go to the normal MUSH that everyone is accustomed to hearing!
last of all,,,,enough volume to blow a 100 watt marshall and your balls 20 feet back

if you pay 2500 for any amp you ,,,,,,oh nevermind,,,,,,,its just funny how much the public is willing to get reamed,,,,and nomatter what you own,,,or how much you pay for that snob appeal,,,,it wont do a damn thing if ya aint got the skills!

"No more tears" was a 50 watt Marshall 2204 cranked-EMGS in a Lester will give that tone in spades but it will be LOUD-Also,important to keep in mind that most of those tracks were doubled, tripled and quadrupled in studio which lends to the saturation/thickness

BTW- Lee Jackson stuff always sounded fuzzy to me.(just my opinion)

I know all those recordings were multi-tracked...but I've played through at least 20 different JCM80 2203/2204 over the years...and none of them nailed the base tone on NMT...IMHO. Even with a EMG 85/81 loaded LP.

eq,compression and other variables matter too. Its very hard to guess exactly what the base tone is because it is never heard on a produced record, nor is anyone's live tone exactly like the record-there are way too many physical variables. IE air movement, mic position, room sound-it goes on and on
.
I can tell you a stiff/high wattage speaker,a 2204/03(early) in good health cranked up with 6550's and the emg's is very, very close. Doubled in the studio with slight eq differences between the two at the amp and board will give it that sound perfectly. I know I can pretty much "get" his late 80's tour sound with one 1/2 stack.use 11's for strings too, nines will not get that fat bottom grind like on NMT.

I saw him live last year real close with BLS with 2 800 1/2 stacks (one clean and one dirty)and it sure sounded like a 6550 loaded marshall 100 with that boss pedal jammed in front-didnt sound like any recorded stuff, but again there are variables.

First off, I am 33 and have studied music and theory for the past 17 years. I play in an all intrumental three piece band like Satriani/Vai.

As for Boogies, I had three of them, bought into the hype and was never satisfied with the tone.

I think that the Ectascy is a great classic rock amp, and for NuMetal if you are so inclined, that the VHT Pitbull or the Ubershall do a great job. I don't play NuMetal by any means, but I do own all of the aforemention amplifiers and do use them for recording purposes.

I have no idea of your playing ability, and you OBVIOUSLY have no idea of mine, so I don't know where you get this superiority complex that you are such a better player than I. As for the $$$ issue, I have 10 boutique amps at the moment, so the extra $1,000.00 hasn't been an issue; and not to worry my children are still eating fine, house is paid off, college educations are fully funded and no credit card debt, so I am ok. Thanks for the concern though.

Actually on NMT his JCM800's had EL-34s...he hadn't made the switch to 6550's...which happened later on. Zakk also supposedly went strainght into the JCM800 (no EQ, Compression, etc.- unless they were added post-production). So here-in lies the question...

Im sure there was plenty of massaging of the album in production-any time a mic or di is sent thru a board the board preamp colors it. The 80's were all about slick production IMHO. Also ala Jimmy Page mic placement will radically change the recorded tone of any amp straight in due to the physical sound properties even when plugged straight in. I feel most times I find myself a little disappointed at a recorded tone compared to standing there with my pant legs blowing forward with the amp up to god volume:lol

Which brings me too the "No more tours"(I think) live album-that is mixed piss poor imho.

I have always heard and read he used 6550's since the beginning, but who knows how many times stories change and whatnot. I was probably 10-15 feet away from his rig at soundcheck last year and that thing was cranking and sounded great UNTIL they turned the mic on and it seemed to lose the tone quite a bit. Now,to me the pa always seems to hinder tone more than help except that it makes it louder but more "generic" which is why I like to see bands where I can get close to hear their real tones.

BTW I definitely cant get that tone below like 8 on the master:dude

Also,it seems as though the old ge 6550's crunch like mad compared to the new offerings-Im lucky in that I have a friend who repairs and services hammond organs and he has a great stash of nos 6550,s

Agreed. I know what you mean about the board coloring your tone, when you plug in, but I still hear something missing. The same pretty much applies at live shows. A band will NEVER sound the same live compared to a CD, which was recorded and mixed in a studio. Live tone and studio are pretty much like comparing apples to oranges, for the most part.

Now in regards to the 6550's...I don't like 'em because they are too clean (too much headroom) as far as power tubes go. They let too much of the preamp come thru. I like EL-34's better because you get a bitter mix of power & preamp tube distortion (ie NMT).

I saw him last year at Ozz-Fest and was less than impressed with his live tone as well.:edr

That's why I'm after the NMT tone...Which is bascially a LP thru a JCM800, with a little something extra thrown in- not the EMGs, not a pedal, not post production magic - that something extra is what I'm after.
Hmmm....:light

Hmmm,I wonder.... My 80 2203 gets that tone very nicely with 34's (not enough bottom though) Makes me think a tweak to the slope resistor at the factory may have given it more gain(it really is nasty for that style of amp) I have had 6550's in it and it grinds nasty as well with more bottom and push---WHICH brings me to why I use a 69 super bass set for clean loaded with 6550's and a sansamp-Now that way I can get that great tone without killing the audience-We do some new ozzy (Gets me thorugh) and NMT on occasion-My guitar playing friends are amazed I can get those tones with just an "old amp and a pedal" .I just got sick of chasing those "god" tones within one amp and found the pedals did me justice without running a multi amp rig.
Have you tried chinese 6550's? They distort about 20% earlier than russian or american tubes.

Also, those ev speakers he uses are like 200watters-the 6550's seem to grind better when no speaker breakup is present.

I used to own a '73 100W Super Bass...killer amp :!

I always thought the Super Bass 100W/50W head had more gain than the Plexi's and 1959/1987 of the same time period IMHO. I've tried 6550's, but not the Sino (Chinese 6550's). I know what you mean by the EL-34's not having enought bottom. Although I've usually had better luck with EL-34's and a LP w/ EMGs...no pedal. That's why I was hoping a small mod (extra 12AX7 or resistor replacement) would push it over the top...it would be right on the mark.

The old 1959/1987's from the '70's are much more versatile than people believe...especially if you throw in a pedal or two.

Maybe I'll give the Sino 6550's a whirl...

Ed Roman once loaned me a Lee Jackson-modded Marshall. Like some earlier in the thread, I did not care for it. A guy in my dorm had a Metaltronix amp that sounded pretty cool, but it wasn't something that I would be looking for. I did think it was more usable than the modded Marshall I borrowed.

Those Ampeg Lee Jackson models with the key on the front sounded pretty good. Out of the three, (Marshall, Metaltronix, Ampeg) the Ampeg would be the one I would want. The bad thing is I think Crate made them so I'm not sure how reliable they are.

Just go get a Legendary Tones Hot Mod or Lynch Mod if your Marshall has a master volume. Takes a couple minutes to install and it's easy to return to stock. No permanent mods .

The consensus that I have read about them are all favorable & very positive. I myself prefer just a classic 'boost pedal' that can be activated when needed. David Szabados is very active & helpful with his Hot Mod products all across Social Media.
