What matters is the direction of the current flow in relation to the north/south orientation of the magnet. If both pickups have the current flowing over the south side then the north they will be in phase. Conversely if one pickup is reversed, that's what causes the out of phase nasal sounding tone when both are engaged. It doesn't matter which way teh adjustment screws are facing. It works real well when the volume control is turned down on one pickup as well as teh tone controls.

I've owned a '61 SG/Les Paul that had out of phase PAF's from the factory as well as a '62 345 that was the same way.

345 and 355 pickups are supposed to be out of phase.

Man, you really notice it, going from the Bridge to Neck, the neck just punches you with enormous low end that the bridge lacks.

Maybe the bridge is too far away from the strings and the pickup is too close to the strings now. try balancing them by changing the heights.

I have no explanation the SG pickups being out of phase. Unless they came from a 345 or 355 :)

I wasn't looking for an explanation. I was just mentioning it. It just happened that that SG had out of phase pickups from the factory. Not the first or last time something like that happened at the factory at that time. Anything was possible.

Years later... wondering if the pots and caps are wired 50's style or was changed to modern wiring when the "work" was done on Green's LP. I would think that would have a significant effect on the tone also.
