CC#6 - thin headstock veneer or over-polished?

I am loving every minute of playing time of my CC#6 SN21

One of the (many) things that strikes me as being unique is that from the player's angle, the headstock looks almost like it has a cherry red binding around it. This is because the edges of the headstock are showing more of the cherry mahogany than the black veneer.

Is this because that veneer is thinner than what I am used to, or did they sand the heck out of it at the Custom Shop.

Any owners of CC#6 or any other CCs seeing the same thing?

in case anyone is interested: here's the control cavity of my CC#6. Note the stamped serial number of Mike's original 'Burst:

Nice! Thanks for showing us those.
Peghead has a very thin piece of "Holly" veneer glued over the mahogany. The Holly comes from Canada and has been used by Gibson for decades. The "Gibson" logo is inlayed into it so the sheet with the inlay can just be glued onto the front of the peghead. Holly is a white wood. When Gibson uses the cherry red pore filler on the neck, some of the analine dye will migrate to the holly and tint the edge of the veneer. The migration of dye will fade and disappear over time./ This same thing can also migrate to the neck binding.

Agreed -- that doesn't look like binding 'bleed,' it looks like the veneer is slightly too small.

Maybe that's the way Slub's original is and Gibson just copied it...:wah

I don't think Mike's The One has the same headstock veneer. Mike was kind enough to let me spend some time with the original '59, and I think I would have noticed. The pictures that were taken also seem to indicate that the original has a veneer covering the headstock in a traditional way. (I am reluctant to post pictures here without Mike's permission, but I am sure he will chime in sooner or later).

Back in the '50s, Gibson used a holly headstock veneer. They did paint the edges black, which Gibson doesn't seem to do today. Yours looks like they may have sanded the edges of the veneer a bit more than some.

All of my Historics look more or less like yours, with a line of "white" wood showing at the edge of the headstock.

I've seen vintage Les Pauls and other Gibson models with this look. :)

Tom,

when we talked in Arlington, you told me that you've been keeping track of Sandys - have you seen any Sandy headstock veneers like this? I am trying to keep track of CC#6s, and I haven't observed this on any of the 30+ examples that I've seen.

I thought this had been brought up in a different thread before -- IIRC, someone asked Mike about it and he remarked that his original wasn't like this.

I have not been keeping up with the Sandy's as there are far too many. And the photos I get concentrate on the body. So far, I have only seen two in person.

my Felder aged and signed has it also and my Rossington also.

I don't know why, but I like it. This is the Rossi and the lighter area is not as strong as the pictures show

BTW, Werner, I like the look of your CC6's headstock with the lighter edges. Has got something authentic to me, but that's just my impression. Nice top carve as well
