Hey guys, I purchased an original (except for two caps) '58 tweed super back in December, the tolex a little beat up but gives the amp some character. I have been playing it every day for the last 6 months with a weber attenuator with just slight attenuation.. So, today I plugin my Vic 50212 which has a tungsten p12q speaker and an original Jensen '59 p12q, after 10 mins I ended up blowing up the Jensen, what a bummer.. That got me thinking if i should replace the original speaker in the super with some reissues or weber in order to preserve them.. My wild Rock & Roller side tells to play the shit out of it, my conservative side tells me to pull them .. Also I'm concern the sound of new speakers will make me unhappy ..

what's your thoughts...:hmm Help me decide...

Thanx

Unless you play at really low volume, you are going to blow those old Jensens. It's a matter of time.

I have put reissue speakers in many of my vintage amps and have kept the originals in the event I ever sell them. No regrets doing this.

There are some great sounding reissue speakers. :hank

I have a Clark Penrose Amp that is a Super clone. Stock 2x10 Super circuit. I recently took out the Weber 10 " pair and put in Celestion Gold 10" speakers. I couldn't be happier. They are alnico mags, made in UK, and have a Celestion alnico sound. Which to me is not terribly unlike the original alnico Jensen sound. Certainly opinions will vary, but I think they make a great replacement in a Super. They are a bit expensive, but once you hear them start to break up you won't mind the price, the tone is excellent. I like them as well as or better than than original Jensen's.

I have two tweed Bandmaster clones that I am considering upgrading to the Celestion golds. They will actually fit inside an original Fender tweed Bandmaster...that is a challenge fitting some 10 inch speakers in that top position!

FYI, I really never liked the Tungsten speakers. They sound harsh when overdriven to my ear. I do think the Tungsten amps are very well made. I have a Tungsten Deluxe clone. I put a Celestion Blue in it. I think Weber makes some good speakers but they vary a bit from batch to batch IMO. I tend to prefer Eminence and Celestion alnico more in tweed Fenders.

As mentioned if the amp is in good shape and close to all orig, definitely replace and save. Unless as Mike said you play at bedroom levels.

Daniel Lanois the Famed Producer and Guitar Player replaces all his vintage speakers, bags and stores them in cartons to preserve the value.

If you're a house player I vote recone and play on. Nobody has yet nailed those old speakers. Kinda close, but not dead-on.

Weekend warrior or more go new.

Yes, I'm in house player these days. I keep getting fired from bands for upstaging the lead singer..:hee
I'm going to give these reissue and chance, if they don't meet my expectations , I will be going back to the original and take my chances...

I play at home only with my old Tweeds, all are 100% stock, never had an issue with the orig speakers in 12 yrs playing them.

If you want the vintage vibe go with reissue Jensens , if you like cranking the volume maybe try some Celestion 10's .Kind of gives you a Marshall vibe

Thanks for all the advice guys,

At this time I have decided to keep the original speakers in and play the crap out of them and take my chances... It sounds to good to mess with and I rather be playing than swapping speakers ... :dude:

There's very little chance involved, if my experience is anything to go by.

You WILL blow the Jensens...:laugh2:

Agreed… If you plan on getting the amp above two… The speakers are gonna fail and burn up. In tweeds I am a fan of Celestion speakers. Very warm and tight sounding. Weber just sent me some of their alnico 10 inch speakers that clear the transformer on the Bassmans that sound fantastic if you are into alnico.

Good luck and play loud!
Joe B:salude

By the way… we get 35 shows out of the classic 80's in the high power tweed twins before the cones literally start and sometimes succeed in twisting themselves off the baskets. :##

Thanks again guys, some real honest responses..

Well today I decided to take an indepth look into the original speakers.
Put the amp on my bench and to my surprise they are recones. So I guess not much lost if they blow, I think ? ...

I play the amp with the volume on 8 and use a weber mini mass to slightly attenuate.. Loud and proud..

i was was thinking of putting some celestion golds in, but I'm concerned about increased volume for the equal break up.. This amp has a real sweet breakup point at the volume I play at hate to mess with.. If I find a pair I might give them a try...

I'm going to take JB advice and try some celestions in my low powered Vic, since I blew an original p12q which started all this..I have a bunch of clestions to try. Mid seventy g12 black backs, scumback m65's, V30's, G70 Aniv.

will report back...:salude

Well I took Joe's advice and install the only 8ohm celestion I had on hand, Marshall labeled v30's, I think from late eights... Well Joe was right tha amp sounds way way better, thicker sounding, more balls and still has some nice top end... I couldn't be more happier with the change.. Thnx Joe...:salude

+1. Took the Oxford out of my Brown Deluxe for the same reason. I knew the amp was going to be gigged at fairly high volume for long periods of time. Just get a decent replacement. If you *need* the total vintage mojo, you can easily put it back in for lower volume stuff-like recording, perhaps?:)
