When I first read this through I read it as, "came with a nice old leather strap on."

Given the content of this thread that wouldn't be a stretch... :ha

OH HELL NO, that is GOLDEN!

just sent a link to the auction to the guy who would be most qualified to confirm or deny the authenticity of this piece.

I don't know about the other guitars in this photo that Mr. Stephens is holding but the one in front with the broken out neck is in fairly well known Guitar Dealers guitar collection with a neck and hardware now. I assume its the one I heard about in the mid 80s about a woman who threw an original Explorer in the trash after the neck was broken out of the body. Maybe Mr. Stephens used it to measure and work off from to build other examples. If you look past the control knob area there is a distinct wood grain pattern. There are several pics of the 58 Explorer I am talking about online. hint : also the end of the pick guard near the tailpiece is broken off at the screw mounting holes. The are barely holding the guard down. If you take a good look the wood grain in undeniable.

the only explorer in the picture which was built by michael stevens has his name on the headstock. the explorer in front lost it's neck in a car accident that killed the owner, a pillar of the vintage guitar community.

dave rogers owns the renecked explorer now.

Thanks for the information Matte, tragic to say the least! I remember seeing some damage on the rear of the treble bout on the Dave's Guitars Explorer, that explains how it happened....

Peace,
Eddie

Richard Henry, did the guitar have the 60's Nylon (Delrin) saddles when you authenticated it? They now appear to have been replaced or possibly the whole ABR? I'm not maligning the guitar in any way, this is something I just noticed and was curious about....

Thanks!

This is a pic I've had for several years...

Hey Luke, here's a pic of how the guitar was when I had it. Any idea where/when your photo is from?

Hi Luke,
When the the '60 Explorer was bought from KIrk Hammett in 2006 it had the nylon (Delrin) saddles, I was there!

My apologies Richard, I do not..... it's at least from around 2006-2007 best guess.

How many real Korina Explorers had you examined in detail prior to your authenticating the guitar for the Harrisons when they bought if from Kirk?

As Hernia would put it, take off your skirt Clive.

Re: 1960 Gibson Korina Explorer " Kandye Kane " Guitars West Owned on ebay

I have just read Richard Henry’s post about how the Explorer was bought from Kirk Hammett, some of what Richard has said is quite true!
As I posted before, It was Richard who asked me if I would go to San Rafael to check out the Explorer and authenticate it.

It was also Richard who asked me not to mention that Music Ground were buying the Explorer because of some discrepancies they were having over amplifiers with the band.
I didn’t mention who was the buyer but found this rather odd as it was Rick Harrison who was handing over the payment for the guitar and he wasn’t exactly difficult to recognise.

In my opinion Kirk wasn’t duped into selling the guitar, I was told that it was he who had asked the shop if they were interested in buying both his Explorer and Flying V, also I was led to believe that the Explorer was being sold for what was considered to be the market price at the time or just under it, somewhere in the region of slightly less than $200,000,
I was told his price was originally a higher, this doesn’t sound like a “dumped it price” to me. Any how it can’t be both “Duped into selling” and “Dumped it price”, it has to be one or the other! It wasn’t until a few weeks later that the market price rose at the sale of the “Skinner” Explorer auction.

In any case I wasn’t at the studio to enquire into the business practices of Music Ground that was Richard’s department! He was the employee who had asked me to take part in the authentication of the Explorer, which I did. I found the guitar, in my opinion to be original and it was bought.

The reason Kirk Hammett wasn’t at the meeting/sale of the guitar, I was told by the Metallica staff, was because the band had left for the day, we were about one hour late in arriving due to traffic.

I personally don’t see how any of the above has anything to do with the fact that an original 1960 Gibson Explorer that everyone was happy with, suddenly becomes a fake 18 months later because of a fall out between employee and employer.

So Richard, whatever has gone down between yourself and Music Ground that is your business! It is no reason to malign the Explorer. You have said that Perry Margouleff has stated that the guitar is not correct and that he has or has access to 10 Explorers, (I don’t know if this is true or not) I know of him but don’t know the guy.
I’ve compared it to 3 that he knows and it matches, I’ll compare it to 10.....lets see if they match.... Or can’t I see them? Let the gentleman call me if this is so, or I’ll call him, either way is fine with me. I don’t mind checking them out.

By the way to all Forum members! I haven’t made or aged the 1960 Gibson Explorer just authenticated it and still believe it to be original.

I did however once make a lefty similar styled guitar for a friend but that now, has “Dwight” on the headstock because I own that name. It was also different in construction and internal routes intentionally! So it could never have been confused as a Gibson.

For the sake of accuracy (I was there) it went down something like this:

Location: Castle Greyskull Leeds (aka) MUSIC GROUND
Date: 2006

JUSTIN: "Richard will you please call your friend Clyde and ask him if he wants to fly out to California next week with my dad to look at this Kirk Hammett Explorer?

me: ok

I have some questions, but please forgive my ignorance, as these might be glaringly obvious to others here. Concerning the pick guard nicks and checking, does any of the checking continue under the pick guard? Would "real" checking stop at the pick guard?

Also, knowing that Gibson recording keeping is incomplete, but does the serial# match any Gibson production ledgers?
