• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Hey Joe B...rig rundown of the new BCC album please??

The album was cut at East West Studios in Los Angeles..

Studio 2 or 3?
I've just looked at their website, I didn't remember the place had gone through such a nice "refreshment" a few years ago; such a nice studio, and looking at the studio pics and gear list is simply what dreams are made of! You can't beat the wow factor of those old 80 Series Neve and A-range Trident.

Looking forward the album Joe, and even more catching you on tour with the band :salude

Joe; I'm glad Sergio is rewinding those!! I've been dealing with Him/Mercury for 30 years. Their work is the best you can get. He's rewound a number of old Fender's, Vox & Marshall tranny's for me. He takes them apart layer by layer documenting the un-winding so he can put it back together exactly as it was with the exact size wire and insulation!:yah

The songs are very much in the school of deep purple and Free. I used the high power twins and the Bassman amps til each of the Bassmans decided to take a three week union break. Output transformers all around. Mercury Magnetics is rewinding the originals as we speak. Luckily I had the 3x10 Slub -o- fier and a low power twin to take their place. I only mic one amp directly in the studio but use all four. The room mic loves big volume. My trick is to be absurdly loud in a small room. If it doesn't shake the walls and rattle the glass ..... add another amp. Skinner Burst 90 percent of the album and there ya go. Liberating not having to do the pedal dance anymore. Sounds bigger to my ears. :salude

Thanks.
Will that be the live rig also - no board, no reverb, just guitar & amps?

My tweed rig is MUCH louder than the Marshall rig. Those little yellow boxes pack a punch!! The album was cut at East West Studios in Los Angeles... 10 mins from my house using 120 ish volts.
Joe B

Joe, as you obviously know, those amps were designed for 110V.

Adding 10V on the primary (~ 10%) adds the same 10% to the secondaries. That's about 45V more on the plates. Which means more power into the output transformer. Also means the tube heaters designed for 6.3V now run at about 7V, which is hard on the tubes. Not to mention the first line of filter caps is now seeing well in excess of their 450V rating.

All around, that's bad news.

Most places in the country are actually closer to 125V on most days, which is even worse for old amps, of course. They need to be fed a controlled voltage of 110V. Sounds better, too.

Another wild guess..........VARIAC probably in use.

No need to guess:

Emphasis mine.

Sure that could simply be the wall voltage. Owning as many vintage Fender tweed amps as Joe does, I can't imagine he wouldn't be hip to using a VARIAC to preserve his valuable collection. But what do I know.
