I think they disappeared when the 2013 line up came in. It made a difference in my opinion.

Thanks. Do you know when it started? I have an '05 R4 and an '06 Historic Special.
1990s; on the historics from the beginning.
I think this truss rod condom tone sucking myth is blown way out of proportion. It is a very thin plastic sheath to prevent the glue fastening the fretboard to the neck from compromising the truss rod's function. People here talk about it as if the truss rod is inside a garden hose.
Gibson has since reverted to the historically accurate condomless truss rod, but I don't believe for a minute it has a significant impact on sound. YMMV. Haters, flame away...
I would agree as well and my comparison is from my Norlin era Les Paul Custom (9lbs ) and you should feel how resonant this instrument is as well as my 2014 R9 is . Sometimes it's all in the wood ! My Les Paul Custom I would put it up against any Les Paul for a tone test comparison or whatever except for the holy grail period of 58-60 .I'm in complete agreement. I own R9's from 99, 00 with and a pair from 13 without. A non issue, imo.
