• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Valuable information to consider when evaluating the authenticity of a vintage burst

And please thank Terry so much from me for his time and trouble. I owe him a pint (at least..!) :dude::hank

I am hoping you got my email from earlier today that included Terry's contact email. I encourage you to talk to him about this.

That’s extrapolating a helluva lot if he’s only looking at the pictures provided.:jim

At this point I'd like to put forth a suggestion that's consistent with the long tradition we have here @ the LPF of naming 'burst's .
An appropriate name for this guitar IMHO would be

"The Nile 'burst" :salude :dude:

So Terry Mueller is not allowed to form an opinion about a guitar just from looking at pictures, but you guys are. Hmmm....

And don't forget that I'm the only person on this forum with the benefit of actually holding, playing, feeling, smelling (of vomit..!) and hearing "The Nile"... :)

Re: Restoring my 1960 'Burst... need HELP..!! :)

I don't get it.

OP: "Coming to see what experts think"

Crowd: "X, Y, Z look funny"

OP: "I'm not seeing it"

Crowd: "Look again"

OP: "But, hand made and all that"

TW & Mr. Authenticator: "Yes, it is all funny and wrong cause it was bastardized, but the wood is real."

OP: "Sweet! I owe that guy a pint!"

Kind of an odd script, no? I mean, I'd be really pissed to find out it's much much more wrong than I thought after defending every nuance even if it was real. Like, re-logo and extensive wood working and refins and all that kind of wrong, not the minor quibbles you'd find with a typical "turd."

So odd....great thread BTW!!

^^ This sums up pretty much what I think about this whole thing.

Just noticed that Google describes the Nile as "famed for its ancient history".... Very fitting! :) :hank

Rev.WillieVK has asked me to post a pic showing the truss rod route on the headstock, under the truss rod cover. So here it is in case it helps...

In your opinion....

Only the checking is my opinion, and I'll say it's the opinion of somebody whose experience should be taken seriously on the matter. The other things are facts. Fact, the headstock shape is wrong. Fact, the tenon is wrong. Fact, the cavity is incorrect. Fact, the knobs look too close together.

Terry's a fantastic luthier, not a Burst expert or authenticator. You have guys on this thread, and privately off the thread, who have seen and handled either dozens hundreds of Burts individually, who all think this thing is wrong. The only thing that could make me more sure this is not a real Burst is if it had a COA from Joe Ganzler.

Here's my '60. Tell me what differences you notice. I see at least 4 things wrong with your truss rod shot.

I realised I was sent pics of this back in November where it was being offered for sale as a ‘reworked ‘60’:

The knobs are in the wrong location/orientation, although they’ve probably just been ‘worked on’

It looks like 22 has been completely diddled out of existence while 21 isn’t.

If that one passes the bar for being real then we'll have dozens of new Bursts popping up soon. :bigal:bigal

What bugs me more about this picture? the neck tenon? The completely wrong pick guard? The fact that the neck binding looks totally wrong, or that the black dye somebody smeared on the fretboard got onto the binding and inlay? Or what looks like one of the worst fret jobs I've ever seen?
