• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Not sure who else follows TrueVintageGuitar on Instagram but he managed to find a '58 burst in Cape Town, South Africa and flew over to pick it up.

He says it's uncirculated?

Not often one pops up in your home town

Thanks for posting Nick! This was a true guitar safari :). The most nerve wracking part was when I woke up to an email the day before my return flight saying it was cancelled by the Dutch government. They banned flights from South Africa so I wasn't able to connect in Amsterdam. I was lucky to rebook that day for a return flight connecting in Qatar. Anyway, here is another picture of it in as-found condition!

Disclosure: this guitar is not for sale. I am a dealer but am not advertising this guitar for sale.

Did it get its own seat on the plane?

What's happening to the bridge, is that the climate in South Africa?
Are you going to clean up the hardware or leave it like that?

It appears to be glue to prevent the saddles falling out (non wire retaining ABR1).

The 10 hour flight from Cape Town to Doha, Qatar and 14 hour flight from Qatar to Philadelphia were both pretty empty so I didn't feel the need to buy an extra ticket. I had the original case in a cloth cover/bag and stored it in the overhead bin. The Philly to Charlotte and Charlotte to Birmingham flights were both close to capacity so I upgraded my seats to first for those so I could board early. The gate attendants were all very accommodating and were totally cool with me bringing it on board.

Yes, the previous (probably original?) owner had some trouble with the bridge collapsing in the center and something with the saddles. He attempted to glue in the saddles which made everything worse :ROFLMAO:. There was actually a plastic bridge-like item on the guitar when the family sold it. I removed that bridge and reinstalled the original for these pictures.

We plan to do as little cleaning as possible. It needs a couple of small things addressed before it can be professionally playable, so we will only clean where necessary to get it back into playing condition.

It had a strange large plastic plate bridge with triangle shaped saddles on it when I got it. They made that bridge with non-staggered post holes, so it has a second bridge post hole right next to the original. The original bridge post hole was plugged with something so used the second post hole to string it up for these pictures. Joe Glaser will be remedying that and the refret soon.

That guitar made the rounds here in the states 10ish years ago at the Dallas show and some others.
Due to the issues found, we all passed. Hopefully she will now find a rebirth.
It has certainly been "circulated".

Hey Mike! I think you may be mistaking this one for another one. If the serial number of the one you're thinking about is listed on Burstserial.com, then this is not the same guitar.

No, it didn’t. And no, it isn’t. Sheesh!
