• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

the R9's are so passé .... now its all about the 58's ...

the 1959 reissue historics are so " 2010 " .... now its all about the 58s which IMHO have always been more vintage looking.

and the new list price reflects this too .... its almost like one of the big wigs at Gibson finally noticed this and asked the question something along the lines of " why are we selling the 58s for thousands less when they cost us just about the same to make and some of them are even more vintage looking ? "

in fact to me the new Murphy Lab 58's are the most vintage looking historics I have seen
( but what did I know .... I am just a character on an internet forum )
You cannot compare new R8's with Murphy Lab R8's . Two different price tiers ! They are all great !!!!!!!!!!

I wouldn’t call R9’s passé, but I am totally digging my Wildwood spec R8 I picked up last year. Right now it’s one of my favorites, but my 2001 R9 is still an winner and gets my attention on a regular basis. So many great examples out there for everyone to pick from.

They all have some cool tops, some 59s look to BBQ some 58s look like a bad LP classic with a clown finish some 60s look to much like the tomato soup can, and have way over stated tops. the point is THEY ARE ALL COOL AND ALL DIFFERENT. the 58,59,60 are all similar enough to be lumped together and different enough for us to have to choose when buying. get what ever reissue year works for you. personally i just got a CME 1958 but it has a V2 60 neck profile and I LOVE IT. what year would that make mine ?????

Here's to Gibson's marketing dept.

Historics are amazing recreations of the originals, and I am yet to play or own a better solid body than my historic.

As to the R8, R9, R0 coding... nothing but clever labeling to suggest correlation with the corresponding cohort of holy grail originals. Some R8s are closer in look and feel to 1959 bursts than 58s, and some R9s are close to 1958s.
Browse around and check out all the R8 and R9 you can find: without knowing what they are, can you tell for certain whether each piece is a R8 or a R9? I cannot. I have seen uber flamed R8s and very plain (but sold as figured tops) R9s.

PS, Ignorance is like a delicate exotic fruit. Touch it, and the bloom is gone. (O. Wilde)

I have handled dozens of reissues (hence not that many)- owned several incl a Historic makeover. Handled and had extended visits with bursts.
A good Gibson neck is just that to me. I have not felt nor noticed a pattern to what is a definitive neck.

Kim Lafleur probably has more intimate time with bursts than most- than told me years ago that the CS 60 neck is about as close as you get to a 59 neck.

Yes, they all are. Something for everyone.
That is exactly where Gibson Custom and Gibson USA are hitting major homeruns in the multi tier price points . From beginner instruments ,to mid level , and up to the Custom Shop with the regular historic R series , all the way to the new offerings from the Murphy Lab . Yes , some of these might not be for every one but Gibson by offering different price points IMHO makes it that much more of an attractive choice for all consumers . Bravo Gibson !

Based on Kim's observation than about the CS60 neck to me means that the Carmelita profile of a vintage 59 is a accurate profile .

While we are on this topic , I have seen R8's with killer tops , R0's with some tops that just plain blow my mind like Independence Day , and R9's as well . That in and of itself is one of Gibson's best qualities as the offerings are there for the taking . For me it's simply irresistible .

agree 100%

this all goes back to "buy what you like". If the killer AAAAA top is your thing, so be it. If you like the R VOS, Gloss, Murphy Lab, aged etc, buy it.
The tops and colors of the vintage pieces run the gamut. But any variation is fine as well. This is why the M2M program has become so popular. You can order that R7 with a pencil-thin neck, or in my case, my '20 60th Anniv R0 has a gigantic neck. I guess some feel LPF opinion plays a greater roll in buying decisions...!!!
