• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

The Gruhn guitar is the true 9_1998. The Lou/Gil guitar had its serial number scratched off, was photographed and is in a book with the scratched serial, then had a new number applied long before the real 9_1998 was found.
Which book/page are referring to?
If the Lou/Gil guitar is restamped, I can imagine why they choose 1998, it does match up very nicely with 1997 and 1999.

Would like to know what book the scratched s/n is in. The Lou guitar s/n does look a tad wonky, but just could be the photo.

A bit strange to drop a bombshell without proof and then walk away, isn't it?..

If you are speaking of me, I started this thread with all of the information I know. I was hoping others would know more about it. There is one comment that stated:

If true, we don't know what the actual serial # of the Lou/Gil/Hammett guitar is yet. They may both be real bursts with a serial discrepancy.

I was talking about TrueVintage's post. I would like to see the pictures of the Lou/Gil guitar with the scratched serial he's referring to.

I have heard stories of Wurlitzer producing double serial jukeboxes, one sold east coast, one sold west coast, but I have never heard of Gibson doing that.

What would be a good reason for scratching off the serial number?

Not sure if being sarcastic but theft is the usual cause!

That said, if the guitar was recovered and identified there is a possibility of the serial being the original. Don't know until we know the full story of this pressing mystery!

Without trying to sound too accusatory, I thought by now with the knowledge on this forum there would be some people to provide some clarity on this. For some reason I get the feeling something like this (double serial number) has happened before.

Wasn't there a V (offered by a reputable dealer) recently with a serial number that the ledgers had noted for a different Gibson product from that year?

It was "noted in the ledgers". It was referenced on another website, but without any photos. So who knows the validity of that other website.

Bump, still curious about this epic coincidence.

And, by coincidence, I mean Mr. Lou's guitar being re-serialized years ago with a fake serial number that just so happened to match a eerily similar rare factory bigsby flamed up 'burst that surfaced later. Talk about odds...
