Marketing stunt.
We can't read others minds and know what they like or don't like . So having said that people can like what they like at whatever price point said object costs . Now I have to think Gibson knows there market in advance of a run like this and knows they will sell . Folks can buy whatever they like and this is how a free market society works and you can't fault Gibson for selling there wares , just like any other business does . Pretty basic , and we are free to choose and that's the beauty of a free market society like we live in versus on the other side of the globe .Again, even someone with the money has countless better options of better guitars and better investments. Not too many collectors in the game are actually dumb enough to drop that coin on a new model Gibson. Unless they are brand new to it all.
Again, even if I wanted one of those single pickup V's bad enough - I'd feel like an absolute chump if I paid what they want for one. Regardless of having the money or not, there is no way to justify that kind of "value". Again, for less than $30k you can pick up an Aged Pearly Gates Les Paul.

The Pearlys were built in 2009 and they now command big money these days. While the tops cannot be duplicated there are close similarities. It was built by someone other than Gibson. That’s why you’re paying for it. Leo Scala built the guitar from Gibson.

What did they look like when they left the Custom Shop?
They left the Custom Shop as korina guitars with Brazilian rosewood fingerboards. Leo then makes the instrument what it is. That’s really powerful, I think.
All the metal parts – including the chevron tailpieces and stop-bars – and the pickups are all done by [Leo Scala.] It’s all handmade. He wound every pickup. There is a lot of work that goes into it. I mean that’s why it took one year to make ten guitars. But each guitar is unique.
Pearly Gates isn’t that great a guitar since it was built back in what? 2012? If Gibson built it today? It’d be much better imo. However! It’s limited edition of 350. So I see the collectibility of it. It doesn’t impress me though…it’s basically just another custom shop Les paul. Unless you’re lucky enough to get one that closely resembles Pearly Gates and I’m willing to bet 90% of them don’t.
I don't necessarily disagree with your general position on this. In fact, I am probably personally more in line with you than not. But that's just my opinion. We can't assume everyone thinks like us and/or sees this like we do. Almost certainly these will sell, thereby proving that there are people who see/think differently. Likes/dislikes and what people chose to spend their money on are entirely subjective. You're arguing that your opinion is "right" (and again, I largely agree with your take on it)... but there is no right or wrong here. Just opinion and preference (and disposable income, ha!).Again, even someone with the money has countless better options of better guitars and better investments.
