• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Hey it's Mat from Gibson Product Development - AMA

Sounds like it.
Maybe, but more people want yous two to shut up, than want to hit the “ignore” button. This is the Les Paul Forum, and not the Stanley measuring tape forum.

I don’t even know if Matt’s gonna come back to this $hit show anymore. And, that is a shame! It’s always a few turds that ruin the swimming pool for everyone else.

......yet here you are contributing to the thing you are complaining about......
I know, right!?! But somebody had to say something, or yous two would still be going at it. Now maybe we can get back to talking about guitars. I usually enjoy a good majority of your posts, and you usually have a good amount of knowledge on multiple subjects. I, and quite a few other people, don’t like thread derailment, especially on such a great thread.

You are pulling it out of your ass, forming an opinion than parading it as fact. You and I can do the same thing Tom is doing? LMAO That just proves you have no idea of Tom's past or experience. PERIOD
Tom Murphy is doing something that is in great demand and is knocking it out of the park big time ! Proof is in the pudding in the sales # . Money talks !

And I hit "ignore" for the first time. For someone who kept saying to use the ignore button, he sure did prefer arguing like a teenage girl on Facebook over taking his own advice. Good grief. @matkoehler I hope this childish bullshit didn't push you away from here. Most of us really love having you.

Hey Matt. I have a 99 Les Paul Gothic. Was wondering about what inspired this guitar and if you have any fun facts about them? All I really know is it has Orville on it, and the original logo on the inlay.

I have learned that there’s a thinner body as well as a rounded 59 neck that other LP of the time didnt get. Can you elaborate on why these choices may have been made for this LP? Also the original brochure for the Gothic series doesn’t include the LP. Only the. SG, 335, 135, explorer and V. Was the LP not offered the first year (98) ?

i disagree somewhat to "knocking it out of the park" in respect to aging

the guitar below shows aged hardware on the shipping label and that's some real bull winkle

lets list the unaged parts

straps buttons
bonnet knobs
tuners
tail piece
tail piece studs
bridge
bridge thumb wheels
toggle switch
input jack

screws

my 2019 custom shop 62 SG in VOS unaged parts list, strap buttons, that's it, even the screws are aged.

Mat, if I buy this guitar can I send it back to the Murphy Lab and have them finish their work aging the hardware?

Pretty much and it's as basic as Business 101 . Tom Murphy with Gibson came up with a killer plan and the proof is in the sales #
you and pat have a valid point in respect to "Business 101" and without cash flow, KKR & Co. Inc. would not be happy

but the SG i spoke of above has a 9k MAP and only a half finished aging job

shouldn't Gibson have some kind of integrity ?

All I know is that Tom used to restore vintage guitars and he may still do it. I've seen them, one in particular was Slim Harpo's old '59 ES-330. Tom took it from a black spray painted mess to it's former glory. By doing this type work and being around so many vintage guitars he has vastly more experience than any of us here. That's been my point. The older fellas who used be active on the forum would be all over anybody saying that Tom's talents are pedestrian and common because it's just not true. Mike S knows it. .......and NOW I know why they all gone. It's not fun arguing with idiots and people who keep score with how many comments their stupid threads get.

That is exactly the damn shame of it all that we have lost such great resources and knowledge . As now some choose to gripe about the smallest tiniest issues or things they believe are "off" . Tom Murphy knows what he is doing and Gibson has invested a lot of bucks in the aged instrument market and Gibson would not go out on a product line like this without doing there homework and knowing there is a "market " for this product . Pretty simple and basic and that's exactly how business makes $ , which is why business is in business to begin with . I have been writing this forever that it is filling a niche or a price point and it is a great choice for the consumer to have, that wants the appearance of a vintage instrument without paying 6 figures and up for a prized valuable Burst . I miss Charlie and Tom W (who helped me out always with his vast knowledge and wisdom ) Your first sentence proves how much Tom Murphy knows , and Gibson is lucky to have him !

Anytime, bud! I’m here for you. And, if I’m “continuing” are you not doing the same?? Lol, careful, your true colors are showing!
Would you agree that Tom M has a very special talent from years of experience? Or do you need Matt to tell you?

No. I'm not the crying.

No, I actually agree with you! Tom is a Bad muh fuggah. He technically could “reverse engineer” the lacquer of old. It’s not outta the realm of possibility to send a sample in to a lab to have it tested. If the dude from Throbak, and Dave from Stephen’s pickups can have metal lab analyzed, Tom Murphy could too. I doubt that if he did, he would freely share the recipe with Gibson for free. Ultimately, we don’t know what in the flying hell goes on behind closed doors like that. We know what we are told.

I just don’t like reading all the back and forth on a thread like this. And the back handed remarks to other people. You got a problem with me, lemme know, we’ll get it worked out! And if you’ve noticed, Matt ain’t been here in a while.

Like I said, I usually enjoy and agree with a lot of your posts, and you do seem to have quite a bit of knowledge on this subject we all love so much.

Matt, I have a question about the maple tops that Gibson Custom sources along with the maple tops that Gibson USA sources . I have read that Gibson Custom now sources Eastern Hard Rock Maple (I think Cesar G. said it in a video to Mark ) ? Where and I am only guessing that Gibson USA sources Big Leaf Western Maple ? Seeing photos of tops from Gibson Dealers such as Wildwood and Music Zoo and Dave's .
