• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

overwhelmed with pedal choices what would you recommend?

I’m sure you’ll get ‘loads’ of recommendations - I don’t like pedal’s & am sooooooo finicky about certain gear - only 2 pedals have made the cut so far both from a guy called Thorpy fx in the uk (a self confessed pedal nut!)

I have the peacekeeper od & a fat general compressor - not found anything as noiseless & musical sounding yet ! - maybe worth a look.

There’s also another great guy called 633 engineering in the uk - another great drive pedal maker.

Only other pedal I fancy trying is the black stone mosfet od

Good luck with the search

I'd check out an ODR circuit with a bass cut like this:

Run the Klon after this to boost it. Another great pedal is a Timmy, Tim, or Lightspeed.

I am a HUGE fan of Origin Effects.

They are expensive, but the best sounding pedals I have EVER owned.

Started out with the OE Slide Rig.

I was SO blown away with the sounds I decided to get the Cali 76 TX-P. I use it on EVERYTHING PERIOD. Vocals, drums, guitar, bass. Anything.

The Slide Rig is flat out awesome as well and works pretty much the same as two 76's cascaded with slightly less control but for slide it can't be beat.

After another Limited run Cali-76 Germanium FET

Then the bastids came oot with this:

I got it as well. Nothing matches what these guys do. You like clean? It makes it clean and RICH. You like dirty? They make it dirty and CLEAR.

I have a lot of pedals and some strange ones like Chase Bliss units, but you said you like simple so this is one I love and it is so easy to use you will wonder why nobody came up with it before...

I use it quite a bit now. Bliss (below) aint for the feint hearted.

Great low gain overdrives that I've been using lately:
Nordland ODR-C
Danelectro Roebuck
Thorpyfx The Dane.
They are all really good 'natural' overdrives with little coloring but with different types of overdrive and features. Very powerful eq on the Roebuck, great clean boost on The Dane. My overall favorite overdrive is probably the ODR-C.

I'll throw my two bits in here. Having gone through many many different pedals, from many many different companies, for overdrive / distortion I am partial to bosses jb2 angry driver. The range that pedal can deliver is very similar to the range the Les Paul itself can deliver. Everything from bluesy Overdrive, to fuzzy sounds to full-blown raging Plexi sounds.

For delay, I use an earthquake devices dispatchmaster, but I'm not sure it's any better than my old boss dd3.

I just picked up an EH Soul Food and am very pleased with it, but you already have the Klon. Also picked up a Digitech FreqOut pedal which is a one trick pony (but it's a very cool trick). These two pedals into a Fender amp gives a very convincing Peter Green "Supernatural" sound at conversation volume levels.

Sticking with the Boss family, you might like the BD-2/BD-2w which is more transparent for a different flavor of OD.

Why would I want an effect to be transparent? If I wanted transparency wouldn't using no effect be the best path?

Transparent overdrive will help keep your main amp tone in tact while just pushing into overdrive, as opposed to your SD-1 which has a mid-push which will change the overall tone in addition to gain.

I like to recommend a good multi effect pedal. Bang for the buck, and the ability to try out a bunch of effects is a big bonus. You'll have fun with the amp sims, or the unbelievable flexibility of an expression pedal that can be linked to almost any parameter! You already have all the required stuff. Go for the fun!

I actually play most of my gigs and travel with a Digitech RP-355. Has very good licensed models of some great pedals.

Cheaper than a whammy pedal THAT IS INCLUDED!

This might sound crazy, but if you don’t quite know what direction to go in, and want to try several different types of pedals without breaking the bank, I really recommend trying out some of the pedals by Mosky Audio. You can pick up each for around $30.

I have a pedal board full of Way Huge, Fulltone, Boss, Dunlop and MXR and they are all fantastic. I’ve been super impressed with the tone. YMMV, but it’s been a lot of fun giving these less expensive pedals a try.

I’m currently building a board full of Mosky and Behringer when I don’t want to take out the more expensive board.

I’m sorry to say that all of us will claim that we have the answer, but it is subjective. There are so many pedals out there way better than Boss, and we all swear by whichever one we have.

That being said, I recommend the Xotic EP Boost. I thought I was buying it to boost my solo volume but the tone became such a foundation of my sound that I leave it on all the time.
I’ve been using the Centuar since about 1995 for a boost. Do you like the EP Boost better? Before the at I used the dod bi-fet which is also pretty good.

That's the way I feel about the Way Huge Overrated Special. But it definitely adds dirt- that's what it is supposed to do. it could stay on all the time- but a clean fender- at volume- is also a thing of beauty.

I have never tried a Centaur. I should check one out.

For the price they go for now it's not worth it (imho). I really like mine a lot but I'm always tempted to sell the first one I bought, which is gold. I have a silver one that is on my board. I never use mine at home but I leave it on all the time when I'm playing rock live.

Thanks for your refreshingly sane take, having both! Mythic... pricing. Given what you use it for, why not look at the EP Boost? That's how I use it, like Tolly... you can shelve both Klons for when you really want them. No risk of it getting 'boosted' off your board.

So much so that even super replicas are crazy. The JHS replica itself is priced almost $1k! No reason not to try a clone, germaniums are better, but cheaper ones abound.

my main amp has master volume, reverb, gain so I pretty much just plug straight in and no pedals here :)
