Those late-60s SG skinny nuts look really skinny. Noticeably so. Kinda averse to 'em, but also curious. Never handled one.

I've been playing my R8 for days and I'm over the moon with this neck.
Although I can't seem to get rid of this sitar like buzz on the high E, at the eighth and tenth fret.
I back the truss rod nut a bit to add more relief, and then raise the bridge thumb washer up a little.
Fret the high E at the 12th fret and check for a bit of gap at the seventh.

Check, everything looks cool, but still have that annoying sitar buzz.
It's enough to drive me back to drinking I tells ya!

I'll also add that it sounds amazing with no pic.
I've been playing lightly and using a thinner pic as well.

I've had my R8 since 2017, everytime I pick it up I curse the huge neck, for the first 5 minutes that is, after another 5 minutes I have adapted to it and it's just plain enjoyment from then on in, it's all subjective

Well, I finally sorted out all the little things. No more buzz, neck feels and plays great.
Lighter touch, thinner pic.

man, that luscious cherry on the bass horn ! …wonder if my aged cherry ‘69 would lighten up to this hue with some heavy elbow grease 🤔 ( sorry for the sidetrack )

No problem, I am grateful for your comments and enthusiastic appreciation!

The new Custom Shop 64 reissues are with the wider nut, lacking the batwing, with a chunkier neck are quite dark but lusciously transparent. My stop tail VOS SG Standard has the weaker cherry stain. It's incredible, the best SG I've ever touched.

I would be GASsing for it, but I've got too many SGs with wiggle sticks!! [2 EE with Tiki Maestros, 1 Custom 61 with Bigsby].

good, that was it ?
No. I needed to do some minor adjustments here and there. Truss rod, string height.
Let it settle, check it again. Try not to worry too much.
What I'm also switching to are, lighter pic size and learning to play with a much softer touch.
Oh yeah, from 10's to 9's.

My neck profiles have always been all over the map ....
That has also been my observation. My previous '06 R8 had one of the biggest necks I have ever played on a Gibson. I got used to it though and felt it had just a bit more tone in that wood than others. Who knows!!

I was having arthritis problems in my left hand so sold the R8 and got an R0 a couple years ago. My hands have gotten better since, so don't know what to think! I doubt if a large-necked guitar had anything to do with causing it but I am enjoying the slimmer neck.
To maybe clarify my previous a bit...

I think it may be the size of ones hand and type of arthritic response.

I have small hands and find myself squeezing a thin neck and getting the pains in my thumb.

Fatter ones change the geometry of where I am levering the pressure more down to the heel of the thumb.

Changing to fat when I start hurting helps with me.

Playing a fat one from the start I can last longer before it bothers me.

But then I can switch to a thin one and relieve that for a while.

I think that playing a fat neck keeps your hand more open than when you play a smaller neck.

I find that I'm not clamping(pushing) down on the neck and don't get much fatigue in my left hand with a 1" - 1.05" fat neck. Gibsons tend to be mostly C shape so it's a great fit, not like Fenders.
1" at the 1st fret is not super fat either, that's a popular misconception!!

This may sound silly but my left thumb arthritis bout was initiated when I was cramming to learn some Hendrix songs for a class reunion I was playing at. Wrapping my thumb over the top to play those Hendrix chords just killed me after a few days! Took a cortisone shot into my thumb joint to fix it.

And yes, I now wonder if I should've kept my R8, fat neck and all.
