• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

I knew Dan a llittle bit right.

Through The Allman Brothers Family. That is a real thing .

I'm thinking 1987 right? Gregg Allman Band is touring and I get a letter at my house. A real fucking letter, in my mailbox. From Dan Toler inviting me to a show.

I went! --- His brother was playing them at the time ....... and well, Gregg Allman was there! Didn't suck.

So I understand there is some premium for the history of this….but is an offset seam 70’s clown burst refin worth that much more than as the original gold top?

I’ve played that guitar! I was upstairs in the dressing rooms of, what was called “The Ventura Concert Theater” in Ventura. Danny was sitting in a little alcove playing it and I said “ That’s a nice guitar” and he said “you wanna play it?” Of course. Anyway, it is the Fillmore East guitar! It has so much clarity and resonance!
Danny had a “Kitty Hawk” amp endorsement at the time and had the whole stack setup. But the head wasn’t plugged in.. behind the stack, sitting on the floor was his 100 watt Marshall head😄. I’ll have to dig out the photo I took.
I don’t know why they’re asking so much for it. That’s insane. I remember Dickey being so pissed when he found out tha Danny sold it. He said “You don’t sell a gift”! He was livid with Danny.. I do wish Danny was still with us. Such a nice guy!

Do you remember the playability on the guitar? I recall reading years back that it was on it's last stretch with the original banjo frets?

This WAS at Matt's Guitar Shop for quite awhile. Is it that shop that is auctioning it?

I saw Dickey's Great Southern band with Dan a number of times in their last decade. The two had a friendly-joshing rapport on stage. Nice to see. Dan was mostly playing a Strat in those days. He explained in an interview (I think in Vintage Guitar) that he had trouble dealing with the LP's weight on his shoulder. I have to wonder if he was by then dealing with the early stages of ALS.
I've lost a couple god buds to ALS and it's devastating.
I'm just going to go on remembering that show at BB King's club in NYC just off Times Square where Dickey was kidding around with Dan. You don't think of that man "kidding around" very easily but he they were. Then they burned through the music.
