Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!
I was bantering back and forth about 68 Les Pauls with Stephen a year or so ago and also emailed him a couple times early last year but did not hear back as well. As with the last two years or so have been pretty upheaval and are seemingly starting to get back on track with routine life.
It’s interesting how many of the 531xxx serial numbered Les Paul goldtops went out in the first week of January 1969. I have a 529xxx that shipped 1/14/1969 from Gibson at the time. Not sure if they built and temporarily stored the completed guitars in the stock room prior to obtaining orders...
Hi Wilko
Was he referring to the 1969 goldtop you reshot in burst and put in humbuckers? I saw your guitar on Gbase a week or two ago for sale and sold already.
Both have the “clover” shaped cavity consistent with 1968 and very early 1969 Les Pauls. The second pic has the early gum drop/bean caps that were also used in the early or first 68 goldtops. But those tend to be brownish/red in color. Also I can decipher the pot codes as 1376745. So the 45th...
Great eye on catching this guitar. I looked up the guitar on Reverb and noticed the case had “OASIS” stenciled on the top lid. Did you inquire about the guitar’s history by chance? Could it have belonged to one of the guys in that band or was it placed there from an original owner long before...
That’s a nice guitar. Has the greening at the upper bout that can be only produced through natural aging and constant playing. How is the heel shape and neck profile on the guitar? Used to have an early one a 501xxx shipped in September 68 from what I remember. It had the proverbial baseball bat...
I had a 68 goldtop 522xxx with the same type neck profile as you mentioned. Like a U-shaped toothpick at the nut to the tree trunk towards the neck joint. Almost like the other Gibson electronics of the period especially the ES and SGs guitars. But from what is said several people worked on and...
I found a pic of a ledger page with a few 899xxx serial numbers including several Les Paul Customs. The pic is on the Heritage Auctions website with a 899xxx guitar they are selling. Supposedly one of the 1968 NAMM Les Pauls that went out on display for that show. I’m looking for a ledger pic of...
This one also has the late 50s bumblebee caps which I’ve seen in several of these models( the middle series goldtop standard models with one piece body and three piece neck with P90s) . It would be interesting to know where these came from and if these caps were left over? Some of these had a...
That guitar is close to 15k US $ now if comparing to Canadian $. The crack repair is pretty mild as to a full headstock or even partial crack break repair. Right now these guitars are selling for between lower to mid teens as far as prices go. I’m seeing late 69 early 70 Les Paul Customs...
Sorry, was reading this post. Wanted to reply on the Goldtop for 15k. It was rerouted for HBs and refinished and old routs filled back in. Most of the parts are aftermarket replacements. Serial#537xxx. So late early series with small peg head non dotted “i”.
That guitar is pretty much priced accordingly. If your looking at originality. These would be or are the last version of the “Standard “ goldtop with P90s prior Deluxe model with mini-humbuckers that came out in mid Summer or so. These had the one-piece body, three piece laminated neck, and true...
