Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!
I was playing some vintage P90 equipped Gibsons today through a 53 Fender Deluxe amp.
Just knocked out by the tone! Both guitars are from 1957. The Special is mine, and the Junior belongs to my good friend Paul.
I have to give the edge in a big way to the Junior. The pickup seems way hotter...
I bought a 57 Special, but needs some TLC. Missing two knobs, and the pickup covers.
The neck pickup is broken and top bobbin chipped. Missing binding on the treble side.
Tuners replaced, but luckily were not drilled or reamed out.
No cracks or repairs.
So, another project, but will be a nice...
I have noticed with the 50s LP Specials I have encountered, You can't seem to
get the bridge pickup close enough to the strings.
On Juniors, the pickup is always pretty close to the strings, yielding a hotter sound.
From a rock/blues players standpoint, I'm thinking Juniors may be a more...
I know the formula was somewhat changed when the T tops arrived on the scene.
More consistant winds, magnets, wire, ect. PAFs were more inconsistent but are considered to be the holy grail.
All in all, the mid 70s and before T tops sound pretty decent.
You guys with the good ears, what are the...
Not exactly the most common tuners for a 50s Les Paul Custom.
But apparently thats what came stock on my 58 Custom.
It seems the most common were the Grover rotomatics with the kidney bean
shaped tuners.
Wondering if the Imperial tuners were special order, or just random?
Any thoughts on this?
I bought this old lap steel today. It has a nice P-90 in it! But its a little different than most P-90s I have seen. Notice the extra thick bobbin material on the top & bottom. Also notice it has one long, but thicker magnet and a
maple spacer instead of the two magnets most commonly found in...
Would Gibson still have old serial # records ?
IOW If I have the original owners/purchacers name, model of guitar, and year purchaced, could they tell me the ser. #?
I somehow managed to dig up enough $$ to buy this guitar.
I have admired it for years when I recently learned it was for sale!
I think its a 59 or 60. I'll have a better clue once I pull the pots.
It was refinished in natural years ago, and many of the original parts are missing. Luckily it has...
I was playing my trusty 59 Jr. this morning when I noticed one of the dots on the fretboard was missing.
When did that happen?! Today ? The last time I played it?
Spent some serious time going over every square inch of the music room floor
which has a carpet with a very busy pattern.
Like...
Anyone know exactly what era, this pickup is from?
These read out at twice of what early Firebird pickups did.
