• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

anyone disappointed that their Les Paul Historic is a pre 2013 ?

And for the record Gibson still haven't made a Les Paul exactly like they did in 1960 and probably never will.
And the argument continues! Lol… However, you’re probably right.

All Historics are Structurally the same from 2002/2003 through today. With the exception of hide glue for the neck, nut material trus rod condom. Nothing els has changed.
2013 was no major change in anything.
Gibson still to this day cant make a PAF worth anything. There so so at best.
Any of my older Historics i still have. Are today more accurate then a 2021🤣. Most Historic guys on here have done the same.
The one thing that is consistent with Gibson is there Marketing exaggerations lets call them...SQR
South American Mahogany vs Fiji mahogany around 2006, also post 2014 Hide glue for fingerboard and for the top to the body.

A 2014 is made of Peruvian mahogany and the "hide glue" used for the neck joint, fingerboard, and top to body is called "Old Brown Glue". Again, nothing close to an original 'burst - but still great in it's own right. I am a big fan of the factory custombuckers.

Let's not forget that contrary to the marketing, our reissues are *not* vintage Les Pauls. They should be evaluated on their own as a vintage inspired Les Paul instead of having their nooks and crannies being compared to the old ones. A great guitar is a great guitar. (All my historics are post-2013.)

A 2014 should be Fiji Mahogany (started in 2006). My 2014 R7 is my favorite Les Paul. I was really looking to get a new Les Paul in 2013-2014 and I did a lot of searching, and I played as many new guitars as I could. And in all my years of playing Les Pauls, I never saw such a high percentage of good ones. There may be a lot of naysayers, but I thought 2013 brought about a bunch of good changes. All I know is that I got a great one. I would have been done buying LPs then until someone offered me a great deal on a 2019 R4 that was an absolutely stellar guitar.

2003 was a phenomenal year, I have never played a bad one. I have Jimmy Page Custom 243 and it is also as good as any Les Paul of any year and rings out like tuning fork - I believe it was made in 2008. However, the very best Les Paul Custom I have played is a 1955 (staple/p90) with an amazing V-shape neck carve. It was undoubtedly magic.

*The very best Les Paul and guitar of all-time is a 2001 R4 Oxblood with a Pigtail Music bridge. (4 1221)

dont tell me about 2003

Saul a big dealer in southern cal begged me to buy a Brazilian 59 from him at a ridiculous low price and I passed on that AND a Rossington with full blown display case and papers

my arse ended up walking out with a 57 goldtop historic that day for $1300 brand new
or about 1900 bucks in todays money - using the inflation calculator on line - shows you how much more they cost now !

no. every time I pick up my 2011 R0 I literally feel like I just won a big prize. I focus & fawn over the things that are mine to lose and not on the things I don't have

Maybe it "should be", but it isn't
How do you know did you have the wood analyzed? Let's see it. Maybe it was an older body they had lying around. What's it weigh? Any we all know one thing for sure, with Gibson you never know for sure :)

I like my 2007 Historic just fine, but I do remember The House of Guitars getting a lefty R7 in 2013 that blew my goldtop away! I had a great set of PAFs in my guitar at the time, and the 2013 was still better. I had put so much effort and money into my guitar that dumping it to make another purchase was out of the question, but that 2013 was an amazing guitar! One negative, the neck was freakishly big. I like a big neck, and mine is a big one, but that 2013 was crazy-big. The eventual owner sent it to Historic Makeovers for a reshape and refin, and eventually sold it. I was really tempted when I saw it for sale, cause she was a good one.

If you're that entitled to be disappointed in a guitar you used to like because it doesn't have hide glue and the newer models do, then sent that guitar to someone who can't afford a historic and who will undoubtedly appreciate it and play the shit out of it.

While I agree with you 100% - there are many many reasons to love a Sunburst Les Paul, beyond their playability alone. Personally I love the Les Paul for every reason thinkable; from the man himself and the team that dreamt it to existence, to the artists who ultimately made it so legendary. From the species of the woods to the color formula in the dyes. The winds on a pickup and the readings on their magnets, to the never talked about angle of the neck. The craftsmanship involved in these guitars is so real and it makes them all uniquely perfect. There is a pride of ownership that is unmatched. It is truly magical in every way.

So I can imagine somebody who appreciates 1950's American craftsmanship as the primary factor of loving these guitars; they would want it done exactly like the legends who built them in the first place. There's nothing like the real deal, as anyone knows, but it would be nice to have the peace of mind that Gibson tried as best they could with no excuses.

I own three Custom Shop Gibson electrics built in the 90's. Haven't come across any others that sound and play as they do. My search has been over for some time.

I don’t get the feeling most people would publicly admit to feelings of regret about something like that. Or they’d sell it before they’d say anything.

My 2011 R9 is one fine instrument. Bought it sight unseen from Mark’s Guitar Loft, and the love affair continues. It has a perfect combination of lots of treble in both pickups, and good mid and bass without mud. Very articulate. That it is a looker too just adds to the vibe.
