• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Does anyone remember the price of a Gibson Les Paul VOS R8 in 2007?

I'm pretty sure an '07 R8 plaintop was going for €2995,- in Europe. But why do you need to know? The market is not the same as it was in '07. You wouldn't base the resale price of a real '59 on the price paid in '59 would you?

As the prices have gone up on new guitars, so it has on the second hand market. Here in Norway second hand reissues from that era are now advertised for a good deal more than the asking price was new back in the mid-late 00's. And by the look of it, they sell too.

it does not matter ..... the price of Historics are extremely more now then back in the day - even when you factor in inflation

particularly the 58 which were a real bargain back then

they are now a prestigious luxury item

Well you had the advertised prices MAP (list price basically) and then you had whatever you were able to get the dealer down to in price.
In 2007, my brand new R6 was 2450.00 ( that may have included tax so +/- a few bucks maybe). An R7 and an R8 would have been right around the same money.
I think $2300.00 is very low, considering my brand new R7 in 2002 was $2200.00
I'd say in the $2500.00 range.

In June 2007 I paid 3200 € in Germany. I know that so precisely, because I wrote it off my tax then and kept the tax-documentation. My R8 was a high-gloss version though and these were going a bit higher than VOS stock. I do remember it being a pretty good price, as it was some hundred bucks less than the common price in other shops I visited around that time. A R9 was already above 4k in Germany.

They listed at $3,000 or $3,100 US but that is irrelevant, it's like asking what a burst cost in '59 because you want to buy one now.

That would sell used for below $2,500 pre-covid but prices are still a bit high.

Long tenon, sheath, yes.

Thanks for all the prices, guys!

The market sure has jumped.

An employee at a local guitar shop told me that Gibson and Fender guitar prices really took off in the last 5 or 6 years.

The 2007 price matters to me because I want to establish a baseline as to the guitar's worth. It's a used guitar and there's nothing special about it.

If I want to pay 2021 prices for a VOS, then I'll buy a brand new 2021 VOS and be done with it.

I don't buy into hype or inflated markets. I've been surrounded by that in the B.C. housing market for most of my life, and it's only gotten worse in the last two decades. Much worse.

Guitars aren't investment vehicles to me, they're merely instruments to be played. If it's a good deal and I want it, I'll buy it.

If I want to make a long-term investment, I'll buy blue-chip stocks and sit on them.

Comparing flucuating VOS prices, to a '59 Les Paul Standard original price, is ridiculous since there were a limited number made and only for that year (now VOS's are churned out by the Custom Shop every year.)

The 1959 Les Paul Standards weren't even that popular when they were introduced and Gibson was flogging them to anyone that would buy them.

It took Eric Clapton playing one on The Beano Album to make them a hot commodity. If he had used a Strat then, where would the Bursts be now?

The current Custom Shop R8's aren't even the same as they were in 2007 and they have better components now.

For example, the 2007 R8's have a BB1 in the neck and a BB2 in the bridge. The latest ones all have Custombuckers.

FWIW, my two Epiphone 1959 Les Paul Standards come with BB2's in the neck and BB3's in the bridge.

Interesting what used to a top of the line humbucker is now relegated to Custom Shop collaborations with Epiphone guitars.

Anyways, thanks again for the information.

You can offer the seller what you think should be the correct price based on what the guitar cost new, but he most likely won’t sell if he has been paying attention to the market as it is today, and who would blame him?

As for BB pickups, most find them very good and the fact that Gibson offers them in some Epiphone models is a good thing. It was the same story with the Classic ‘57 pickups before the BBs. Classic 57s are still good pickups even if they’re no longer used in the reissues.

By the way, the guitar has a long neck tenon, yes. And the truss rod ”condom”. ;)

Thanks for the advice and info, Keefoman!

I don't plan on insulting him, but he's priced too high and I wanted to know how low I could go.

I expect to pay more than he did. If he can sell it for what he's asking, great!

It just happens to be available, and I happen to be looking for a VOS.........passively.

It's actually a wonderful position to be in. I really don't care if get this guitar, so I won't be disappointed if it eludes me. I'd actually prefer an R9 or R0.

I can offer my price, politely, and leave it up to him to decide what he wants more. An overpriced guitar, or a handful of cash.

Considering that most Canadians were only a few hundred dollars away from insolvency before COVID, and we were (and probably still are) the most heavily indebted nation per capita on Earth, I expect to see a lot of deals in the coming years.

Most people up here that received the CERB benefits bought stupid things, instead of paying their rent.

When those relief benefits end, there's going to be a lot of panicked sellers. Right now they're asking ridiculously high prices, but I have recently bought two brand new Fender Telecasters, in mint condition, for much less than what they sold for.

It's just a matter of being patient.
