• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Damn....Why can't I play like........

if you don't practice you don't deserve to dream....and if wishes were horses beggars would ride...maybe you can't play like them because you haven't worked like them, haven't practiced like them, haven't sacrificed like them and haven't committed like they have...

Agreed.........but they've also got something extra.......that mythical thing that just can't be quantified!

Yes there is truth in what you say, but this is all just a "for fun" thread. Even Clapton said in reference to SRV, " will I ever be that good".
Maybe it should have been what guitarists do you strive to play like.

Being a rock player, I'm not all that baffled by my favorites - I'm not saying I can play as well as them, I'm just saying I can hear what's going on and would have an idea of how much practice it would take to get there. But I hear Chet Atkins and am just completely mystified by how he did what he did. Ever seen this? I wouldn't even know where to begin, let alone get to a point where it was committed to memory like he demonstrates:

No amount of practice could get me there. I would self-destruct with carpel tunnel first. And Steve Morse - what planet is that guy from? A true master of all genres.

I wish I could play like Lindsey Buckingham. Specifically I was thinking his fuzz solo on Go Your Own Way, or the acoustic versions of Big Love or Go Insane.

I started on bass in 1969. Didn't start on guitar until around 2000 but progress was very, very slow due to working so many hours for years. I'm an old guy (68) who retired last year in March but it's only recently that I have the time to try and improve. There are so many players I admire (pros to guys in local bands) and I know I will never be able to do what they can on a guitar. Heck, there's 15 year olds on You Tube who can blow my doors off! But that's okay. Learning and wanting to improve is a lot better than rotting in front of a TV.

But I'll name a few I admire for various reasons. Elliot Easton, Eddie Van Halen, Tal Farlow, Steve Howe and Pete Townsend. I could name a lot more.

It's because YOU/ME/WE had a social life as teenagers and don't have the drive to succeed that they have.

I can relate. I can get close enough and add my own style to my favorite rock guitarists styles and have a great time doing that. But I have not been able to get close to what Chet Atkins does, and gawd have I tried. I have learned a lot trying though and it has added an extra dimension to my playing. More like Scotty Moore. I find when I set myself free the best playing comes out, just hit the main licks when doing covers to let everyone know what song it is:)

Allan Holdsworth. I take what bits I can actually play of his and try to incorporate it into my thing, whatever that is. I'm OK with not being able to cop his thing, I don't have 2 lifetimes to try to figure all that out. LOL
