I've just become the proud owner of this 1960 LP JNR. I love the stinger and wondered how rare they were on Les Paul's of this era? I haven't seen many myself. Thanks, Graham.

It depends on how '60 it is. I had a late '60 that had a pretty thin neck.

60's Juniors have the beefy neck profile like the 59's, not slim or skinny by any means.

Not that simple. They follow the neck shape as it slowly changed throughout the year. Like most Gibsons that year, not just Les Pauls [or Les Paul Standards only]. :)

Doesn't forum bro Fred Hollerum's (maybe spelled that wrong) left hand TV Model have a stinger? I think that one's 60ish, but I could be wrong.

I know that stingers were decorative on some higher end Gibsons, but what about Juniors? I suppose there's always the "hiding a defect in the wood" theory. It obviously took some time and effort to paint on a stinger, and Juniors were supposedly a "low cost" guitar.

Oh, and nice Junior Guitartsar - looks very clean. Congrats!

The stingers are very intriguing. We would need someone who worked at the factory to tell us the exact reason for them. Hiding a cosmetic flaw does seem viable and like you say they were a feature on some top end ES guitars.

My `59 Special is pretty beefy. I've played a number of `60 LP Std.'s that were beefy early in the year and like SG necks by the end.

I just love the stinger on some models. Marks had or still has a singlecut jr with a stinger. I know some original 58 V's had this stinger feature but it is very rare on an Explorer which are very rare themselves. I have seen 2 photos of two different 58 Explorers that had a stinger and of course just reading threads on this forum itself has shown us there were a at least a handful of burst that have the Stinger.
