I was wondering when you were going to show up Ramrod? I think you put it well. That is about the differences between these guitars....

Speaking of tomfoolery, a prominent vintage dealer informed me 2-3 years ago that he had an original 1960 'burst that was missing the neck, which had apparently broken off or something. Maxx was commisioned to put a new neck on it w/ a brazilian board pilfered from a 61/62 S.G. The guitar was already earmarked for a certain buyer for $25.000 who allegedly was aware of of the new neck situation. BTW the dealer was not Uncle Lou (remember him anyone?)

hey joe!

sorry to disrupt the thread but what are you talking about when you say iffy neck joint? as long as you don't route it out for a front pickup that joint is great,in my opinion anyhow.:wow

The early DC specials didn't have a big enough tenon- lots of necks came out completely. TYhey were fixed in teh early part of the year.

I don't think anyone said any different.
But I'm too grumpy to go back and check.

"Uncle Lou (remember him anyone?)"

Why, has he gone out of business?

Not that I know of Sean. Its just that He hasn't been mentioned around these parts in a very long time.

BTW I went back to the BOTB and re-read page 195. Yas says "a few examples" from late 1960 have been found w/ the very large necks. I'd say they were just anomalies or expertly done re-necks but it is odd that they would be clustered around late 1960. Of course knowing how Gibson has operated, whose to say those "few examples" weren't in fact guitars made in '59 that got stamped w/ 1960's serial #'s?

Page 195 also has a cross-sectional drawing of the 58, 59 and 60 necks. I know those aren't drawn to scale but are they nonetheless accurate as to the differences between the 3 neck profiles?

W/ regard to special order models, check out the last page of the Dec. 98 GP magazine that featured the Les Paul. It features a 57(I think) custom w/ the 3 pups and 3 control knobs that may have been made for Mickey Baker. The article also mentions a Les Paul w/ 3 P-90s that was pictured in one of the old catalogs. I suspect there were more special order les pauls made than we think, but I would also assume the majority them were made for the more prominent/celebrity guitarits of the day.

I'd love to hear from Robb Lawrence or Big Al on any of these questions!
