1961 SG/LP Value?

There's a '61 for sale at a guitar store a couple of hundred miles from me, so I haven't had the guitar in hand, just had them send me some photos.

They are asking $4500 Cdn (with tax $4725), that's about $3600 US (with tax $3780) right now. Too me it seems too expensive for what it is, but I thought I'd better check in case I'm wrong.

- headstock repair - not broken off, cracked and glued
- PAFs are long gone
- non original Bigsby
- non original Grovers

If it actually is a decent price, I'll go look at it next week.

Is that the original finish on the top?

I assume it's the original finish, bleached out by the sun (or maybe smoky bars). The back is still red.

That's my feeling too. I didn't know about the headstock repair until I saw the pics. Without that, I think it was a decent price.

I paid $3300 for my busted '65...but all the hardware was original and pickups are mind blowing (one is a nickel pat no....don't ask me how or why...and at 8.3k).

Even then I paid too much but I was getting desperate. Mine had a headstock repair and a heel repair. I shoulda paid around $3k max.

A lot of issues there but it may be a hell of a player!! I have a 61 with an original horseshoe bigsby and it kills for sure. I love the bigsby, helps with the weight distribution.

It probably is a good player, but I didn't bother going to look at it because I think it's just too expensive for what it is.
