All early ’65 models

For me, I find these to be the Pinnacle of all the versions through all the years - still with the wide Nut widths of 1 11/16 , and all the best feeling Necks (great Profiles and Size)

Sound:
The Custom sounds dirty / raunchy

The Standard’s sound is that of clarity, kinda like a balls out Tele

The Junior sounds FAT

They are all Inspirational for sure

Please share if you happen to have the same or have experienced the same Vintage

The Trifecta of SGs!!!

How is the nut width of the Custom? Any SG Custom, including the early ones, that I have played have been very narrow.

Just shy of 1 11/16

Yes, Customs (even Les Paul Custom's from the 1950's) often have narrower Nut widths

Thought this was a 1964 when I got it, then one online expert said, "hey that looks like chrome hardware, which would make it a 1965". Total badass, Live at Leeds growl machine.

FWIW and IMHO, the best SG Standard version is this one, 1962 with PAFs. YMMV.

Regarding the pickup spacing on the early SG Specials: when did Gibson move the bridge pickup closer to the bridge and why?

I have a 2020 SG Special that I love but of course, the bridge pickup is closer to the bridge. I'm guessing with the bridge pickup closer to the neck that it must have a fuller sound that's not so bright?

I don't think they moved it until 2019 when they re-released the wraptail Special. My 2006 Classic is spaced like my 1965. The make the Custom Shop like the old ones. I think it;'s just on the newer reissues. And you're right, the old spacing makes the bridge pickup fatter sounding and also thickens up the middle position some.

Beautiful guitars. Crazy how many changes the SG went through during the 60's. Most weird to me was how they kept pulling the neck farther and farther away from the body. The post 66 guitars feel like your fretting hand is out in space. I always considered the 63 with the smooth heel to be the pinnacle of the 60's SG's. The neck is just in the right position and the smooth heel makes the last frets perfectly comfortable.
