• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

The purple ebony block sitting on top of the amp should tell you the whole story. :wah

Deep cabinet, purple and basket weave don't add up to me but I'm by no means a Marshall expert.

Royal Purple with two tone Brown Basket weave possible only true plexi in color in the world

Interesting statement. I have a purple plexi and it is real. The head sitting at Carter that JD was playing through is also real. There's two purple plexi's off the top of my head.

Too bad Banker isn't around anymore, he seems to be very knowledgeable where these are concerned. I believe that there are a couple of other cats here that know about these, perhaps they'll chime in.

That was my initial thought as well. I'm sure John would know more than most.

I think he was referring to those factors all together in a combo amp. I believe it's pretty much accepted that there were purple plexi heads.

It is a shame how the amp becomes more dis-honest every time it jumps to the next dealer in the name of 'restoration', yet the price increases each time with it. here is the original barn find listing:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Wintage-Celestion-Amplifier-/11167190259

personally I preferred it in its original state. get a good amp tech to look over the electronics and speakers and its good to go, no need to scrub it with chemicals destroying the true colour of the original tolex, and no need to add fake logos. looks like the original speakers have been swapped out now too.

that amp is a real headscratcher but my gut feeling is its an original one-off piece circa 1969. perhaps a custom order or something. the purple tolex combined with the brown two tone grill would be period correct. the original speakers were post mid 69 by the type of chassis, but it was very odd they had no date codes on them. a well respected uk vintage marshall amp tech told me the chassis is late 67 or early 68.

notice the box does not have the vents on top. which makes me think it is a later build, rather than an older mk1 box that has been recovered.

I doubt it is a lash-up, partly because of those missing vents (a fraudster would not forget them) and partly because the original seller did not know what he had and sold it for a song to a dealer who couldn't re-list it back on ebay quick enough.

This one is popping up all over the place. Seems like a legit find, but really needs to be authenticated before being sold. Many of the parts are consistent with late '67 (chassis color, board material and color, components and so on). I can't make out the date codes on the mustard caps from the pics. Would like to see the pots and date codes also.

Never seen a true '67 in purple, that I am aware of. Possibly recovered later. Though I don't see any cut marks or peeled glue sections. Maybe it's a just a later cab.
