• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

For the PT I'd most likely look for a code starting with 02.

I scored the same amp several years back but prefer Blackface ascetics so I got a face plate and new speaker grill with aged cloth from Larry Rodgers. I love the look and sound of the amp.

Really great score on a player extraordinaire. I'd just swap out to a repro cab before I spent a bunch time getting a few coats of paint off that may not be much of an improvement but I'm not sure what the point would be anyway. It'll never be anything but a player. I don't know much about blackface mods for the early silvers but may be worth tweaking the circuit a bit if anything. The beauty of a $100 amp like this is that cost $100. I would just play the dog out of it as is if it were me....

Words of great wisdom!!

Great score. The electrolytics need to be replaced...regardless of what they look like. They are no longer doing things the way they should, ime. You coudl try a nuymber of differetn thigns to get the paint off; but I am in agreemtn that with a fresh grille cloth treatment and some good tech work on the circuit, this amp is an inexpensive player that will always turn you a profit shoudl you want to sell it. +2 on the 'it is already a BF' observation. heey replaced until changes were made sometime in or after May of '68 depending on the model.
That PT wiring certainly needs to be straightened out andmade safer, imho.

+1!!
Btw, I've had a '68 DR that was one of the greatest sounding medium-size amp I've ever played, that tone is still in my mind after years it's gone and wish I still had this one in the arsenal..

Agreed, quite clean in there. For some perspective, I just paid $720 for a 1973 Princeton Reverb...again, score!

There's still one or two old pieces around here which is encouraging.........will go well with your '60 335 I would imagine:2cool

Why put all that money into a new cab ? Keep it all intact and play it as is. Maybe do a bit of clean up...but keep it intact.

That amp has a quite story to tell.

Were I to get that amp for $100.00US A new repro Cab, Grill and BF panel would be well worth it! Along with a good service and new 'verb cables and then I'd have a gig-ready for anything amp at a price most others start at. And then get some money back when I sell the left overs to boot. ymmv

I think this is the plan.

I want to clean it up as much as I can, and not spend more money that it takes to get it running, tubes, caps...

I am, however, way in to the '67/'68 cosmetics, so the grille cloth, drip edge, and face plate are going to stay.

I never understood the cosmetic mods to make a Silverface look like a Blackface. It just seems like a waste of money. Or maybe it's because I'm of the age where BF amps started to become "collectible" while most of the SF gear were still in the clubs with players.

I can understand cleaning up or even replacing tolex that's as ragged as this, but can also appreciate leaving it as-is. There are some really good builders out there for a new cab, but you already have the best built BF/SF cab underneath your painted tolex. Imo, the best investment to return ratio is either a re-tolex or leaving it as-is.

I'm odd but I think the drip edge was the best looking Fender cosmetic outside of the finer tweeds and woodies.

That's just me.

It seals the jagged edge, just looks cool.
No one would keep a drip edged baffle in conjunction with a black face panel.
I suppose.

I'm on a drip edge roll! Got out of rehearsal early yesterday and hit a couple of pawn shops on the way home. $65 out the door! It does have a torn speaker however. I may flip this to fund the DR restore. I dont need it, and it doesnt compare to my Silvertone or Princeton. Pretty though!

Nice Bronco!

I get a lot of mileage out of my Vibro Champ (clone) when writing and home recording with a stand-up bassist. Of course I would prefer the PR or Vibrolux, but for my low volume needs I use the VC more than any other of my Fenders.

I agree, but I think the best reason to switch cabs is to get away from the "particle-board" and get to a floating baffle, etc.
PB is really a tone killer, imo.
Ive heard some absolutely amazing sonic differences afterwards.

I agree about the baffle (to an extent) and use ply with my two clones, but I've never felt the urge to change my vintage pieces.

btw, what's going on with this DR?
