Hi Guys - I am selling my 1971 vintage Marshall 1930 (Popular) all tube 'handwired' combo. It will be going onto fleabay shortly, but I thought I would give you guys the first chance as I would rather it would stay with enthusiasts. I have owned her for the last 6 years but I have other amps and this one is just not getting used.
When Marshall first produced these amps, they marketed them as catalogue amps aimed at the student end of the market. But they have come back into favour big time and are selling for quite high prices. You can crank these amps up without damaging your eardrums and you get 10 watts of pure valve overdrive. They were made in either a 2x10” or 1x12” speaker configuration. This is obviously the 2x10”.
Condition wise, this amp is as near to mint as you will get. I bought it from the original owner and you would literally think that it had been pulled out of a cupboard as it has hardly been used. I couldn’t believe its condition when I went to pick it up. Even the lettering on the control panel shows next to no fading. Inside she is untouched, and I believe to be completely original.
There are no tears in the tolex or grill cloth, it is in great condition for its age and is a real collectors amp. The only point of note is that the original owner added a little compartment in the bottom of the amp to hold the power lead and foot pedal to prevent the speakers from getting damaged. See photo 7. This is a great idea, which could easily be removed if you wanted to.
The amp sounds fantastic. It gives a clear ‘bell’ like tone at lower levels, to early ACDC when cranked and any classic blues sound you can think of in between. It has a built in tremolo and has its original footswitch. Its the same size, as near as damned, as the 1974x, and also very similar sounding. I’ve owned 5 of these in the past and sold one in the UK and another to a guy in the US. Obviously if you are in the US, then you will need a step down transformer. The US guy who bought one said that he got one from Wal-Mart or somewhere like that and he had no problems using it.
I am used to shipping gear to the US and pack all my items extremely well for the journey. These amps weigh about the same if not slightly less than the 1974X and to ship to the US will cost somewhere in the region of 150USD.
This amp is the perfect match for any Les Paul. Why pay for a 1974x when you can have a real vintage amp for more or less the same price. You will not find another one of these amps in this condition
