Question:

How come some Silverburst Les Paul Customs made between 1979-1983 have the back of the body/neck/headstock “bursted” and some only have the body/neck “bursted” with the back of the headstock painted black?

Thanks in advance for your responses.

I believe this was the "transition" period when Gibson stopped sunbursting backs and necks on all (Les Paul) guitars. Actually, it wasn't really a transition period. One day the (cost-cutting) decision was made to stop doing the backs and necks, and from that day forward it stopped.

I’ve recently come across a few where the back of the neck and body were bursted. But not the headstock. The cynic and skeptic in me defaults to “headstock” repair.
But, a the sellers swear the headstocks were never broken.

Either way, I’m picking up an all original, excellent condition 1982 Silverburst Les Paul Custom tomorrow that is bursted on the back/neck/headstock.

I’ll post some pictures when I get home.

All of the above ^^ ... and/or just plain old human error (ie, the painter forgot to do the back of the headstock.
