Anyone know when Gibson USA changed the mahogany back of a Les Paul from a single piece to two pieces with a centre join? I mean a join visibly running along the back (not sides) of the body from the neck join to the end strap button, not a ‘pancake’.

I’ve had USA LPs from the ‘80s and’90s that were one piece of mahogany, I recently looked at a USA Les Paul made last year and was surprised to see that the mahogany back was two pieces (join running along back, not sides, from neck to strap button).

I know there was a time (‘70s?) when Gibson were making ‘pancake’ bodies (join visible on sides), so Gibson USA haven’t always used a single piece of mahogany. But they went back to single piece after that.

Yeah, it’s been many years ago now that they started going with 2pc bodies. Occasionally a 1pc will still find its way onto a Gibson USA these days, but the vast majority are 2pc. Some are extremely well disguised (I’ve had some I’d swear were 1pc until I looked on the side of the body down by the bottom strap button) and some are really obvious.

You are right, I agree with you.
