• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

2001 Hist R-9 Should be nearing the end run???

I thought this year's numbers were limited to a lower figure than past years.Anyone know about the status on how this is going? At least the tops on the dealer sites look more consistent than past year models!

Gibson originally said there would be 500 for U.S. and 500 for Foreign markets this year for the R9. As far as the tops go, I think the consistency and quality of tops in 1999 and 2000 was better than 2001 by a long shot, especially the early 2001s that came out. There have been a few runs with decent wood lately.

Yeah, the '99 and Y2K R9s had some nice wood. I like the feel of my 01 better, but overall the wood on the 01s just isn't quite as good as the last 2 years were, and those weren't as good as the mid 90's. The upside is the 01 R9s seem to be lighter in weight overall, and the madagascar fingerboards are nice!

to me it seems like the tops on the 01's are more consistant, like all of them have pretty good figure, but the '99-Y2K and even earlier than that had less consistancy, but had more tops that really stood out as killers. IMO

The only RI I have left is my '99 and I love the top on it. My Y2K had a nice top also. I haven't seen hardly any with the unusual quilt like flame tops since. Rich and Rob also have nice ones. And in terms of weight, my '99 is very light and resonant. And in those years they had both flame and quilt separate, but mine is neither, but a combination of both. The burst paint jobs were very well done at the time too.

The best though, is getting good wood that's light with great tone to it. And if it sounds great to you...that's all that matters;)
