I was over at Carter Vintage Guitars in Nashville yesterday and I check out a few new Les Pauls, man... I'm impressed!
I played an R9, an R8 and a Waddy Wachtel model with a monkey bar on it. All three had the nicest necks, on reissues, I can ever remember playing. For me, the initial impression of any guitar is how the neck feels and I was knocked how by how "real" these necks felt. They all had a slimmer feel without any hint of the shoulders that usually are the tell-tale signs of "reissue" necks. All of them had a nice taper from the nut to body too. Most correct feeling necks I've ever felt from the Custom Shop, great job!
All the guitars had great paint jobs, seems like the painters at the factory are really hitting the note these days. The cherry burst guitar actually looked like an old burst I've worked on recently. The iced tea burst looked killer, with just the perfect amount of "implied" red in them. The Waddy guitar's sort of an "un-burst" and it looked nice; not my fave color as I like a guitar with color on it.
All three guitars were of a nice weight, the WW CC model was actually light, which was amazing for a guitar with a Bigsby.
Acoustically, all three rang nicely and played great, really nice setup on these too. With just a little tweaking and personalizing, they would be killer players. I didn't plug any of them in but I will when I go back there in a couple of days.
I liked the tops too, they looked "real" and were figured nicely, even the R8!
Only complaint I have is about the pickup covers, but I hear they're addressing that this year. So, there ya go... way to go Gibson! :dude:
