2019 R8 with slim neck profile...????

I hate to start this but I did some searches and couldn't find much of an answer. I'm curious what I have on my hands here with this new 2019 R8. I expected a big, chunky neck profile, but what I got was a rather slim, very comfy neck profile, smaller than the one on my '06 R9. I'm not complaining as much as just being curious if I might have a gotten a mis-build, an R8 with an R0 neck? ("Mis-build" is what we would call it in the auto industry, where the wrong feature or option is installed by mistake) The guitar is otherwise to spec.

Some rather rough lacquer on the bass side neck binding. Would not be something that would cause me to get a repair but wondered if anyone else has seen this.

The guitar is a gem otherwise, setup was almost perfect. Loving the "no wire" ABR-1 so much I ordered one for my R9.

I have seen, at Chicago Music Exchange, several R8's with thinner necks. Some with a Carmelita carve, at least one with a R0 carve.

I'm just speculating, but it may be that your guitar was built in a run similar to a CME run. Just sayin'.

agreed...I've seen (maybe it was CME also..I forget ) some R7 Goldtops with R0 neck profiles.

There are a couple of R8 in the U.K. with V2 necks listed as M2M, so I guess someone spec’d it.

Ok, well SILLY ME! I got out the digital calipers and on both my '06 RP and new '19 R8 did some measuring at the 1st and 12th frets.

2006 R9: 1st = .906", 12th = 1.013"

2019 R8: 1st = .910", 12th = 1.021"

SO, they are virtualy identical thickness. But why does the neck on the R9 feel bigger than the one on the R8? Turns out to be the actual profile, the R9 has larger shoulders.

Looking at the Gibson specs the '58's thickness (that I thought was rather thin) is right on the money. I stand "edumacated!"

I had a similar experience with my Heritage H-535 vs my Gibson ES-335. Surely, the ES-335 had the thicker neck. Nope. The H-535 does by a tiny amount. It has less pronounced shoulders than the ES-335. Depending on your playing stye, the neck's shape can affect the feeling of "thickness" more then the measured thickness does!

My 2019 R8 has got the best neck ive ever owned, its got a nice big but not stupid big neck,, perfect!

My 2009 R8 neck is not that big. Certainly way smaller than the R6 & R8 I used to have. In fact it's very close to my R9

Shoulders contribute a tone to neck "volume/displacement".
And keep in mind- in 2006 they were not as careful with reproduction details. To me neck shape is a critical detail- like making a 'Vette reproduction with a 289. Things are more specified now- certainly the retailers are much more involved in what they are getting in the CS range anyway.
To me the R8 is close to 58 specs- I think- although it seems trite- an R9 would be .89 or so. It is still a poor way to define a neck.
