• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Speaking of reissues, I have to wonder what impact the government's 80th Anniversary Great Depression Reissue (which appears to have already premiered, and thus far seems pretty historically accurate to the original) is gonna have on the sales of these 50th Anniversary 1959 Les Paul Reissues.... :hmm

It looks like a les paul, I don't think its gonna be exponentially better than what '59 owners already have

Of course, the true tone test would be to have him A/B that guitar with Historics from previous years. By itself, the video is inconclusive regarding '09's. It only reveals that particular guitar, with a particular amp and whatever the settings were, while not compared to anything else.

Can't tell much of anything from this, although it sounds good...

More interesting is that we may be close to actually knowing the details soon ;)

Looks and sounds like any other good Historic to me.

That looks great. The coloring is the best I have seen since the 1999 reissue, maybe even better than that. He is a great player as well.

Can't tell much sound wise from a youtube video, close your eyes and that could have been a Les Paul or a EVH Wolfgang or any other Humbucker guitar.

As for the hide glue thing, Gibson is selling Chinese made Epiphone Masterbilt acoustics with hot hide glue joints, for six hundred bucks. So why can they not slip some hot hide glue into a $5k+ collectors item? Just wondering.

What I want to know is if the whole "new and improved R9" has come about mostly because of topics posted on this forum and the relationships between members and people at Gibson. The reason I ask is that the R9's have always been touted as being "the most historically accurate" by the company that created them. Why would Gibson not include, from the beginning, all those things that people here have pointed out as necessary for historical accurateness? Obviously the hundreds of retailers that sell these instruments haven't made that big a stink or it wouldn't have taken almost 15 years to correct the errors.

It doesn't seem that anyone outside this forum knows or cares about these details. I didn't have the slightest clue before I joined. No dealer I've spoken with in Chicago has the slightest clue who Historic Makeovers, Vintage Clone, Fatboy or Uncle Lou are. I brought my R7 in with me to one dealer with my aged Dimarzio rings (which are spot on to many in the BOTB book) and he said, "wow I've never seen rings that white before."

Why is it that thousands of these guitars have been sold, but only a handful of people really give a shit? And now the guitars that we all really want probably are going to be priced out of reach for most of us. Just doesn't seem right, especially if the impetus came from this forum.

That's it...I'm done whining. :)

What happened to Gary Richrath? Now that was a guy with a pretty decent LP.

Remember that it was introduced at the Consumer Electronics Show, not NAMM. Most CES people wouldn't know the difference between a Gibson and an Epiphone so they wouldn't run through the specs because those guys only want a guitar game. They COULD have waited one week until NAMM and let guitar players/collectors have first look.

If anything else, we should be insulted that it was not unveiled to the guitar world at NAMM but at CES to the guitar hero crowd. Further proof that they want the larger consumer dollars.

I have crappy computer speakers and that R9 sounded almost like any another R9 I've heard through them.

I wonder if that huge Les Paul in the background has Brazilian? :hmm
