• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Seriously the only conclusions you can get from this video are it sounds and looks like an historic, the amp sounds and looks like a marshall and the guy didnt really reveal any huge details.

It doesn't seem that anyone outside this forum knows or cares about these details.

Why is it that thousands of these guitars have been sold, but only a handful of people really give a shit?

Because this forum is where the real info is about the original '59's. As soon as Gibson calls a historic a "1959 Les Paul Standard" on their website, it's immediately going to be compared to a real one. AFAIK, no one is demanding that historics to be off-spec from the originals. Outsiders don't know about the comparisons being made.
Also, if the Historics consistently sounded better than the originals, then fewer people would care about the original specs.

It's funny how we all make fun of it...and yet I know that I'm excited to see what they got...I'm just hoping I wont be disappointed...but I also hope that it ISN'T too much different than previous years R9's.

I think Gibson is doing a good job...sure it's marketing and a little bit of gimmickry...but its fun!!!!

Maple...

Be nice, Dave is a friend of mine....but yes, he can play!

Hey I watched him on a recent Concert on INHDTV a channel that takes really great footage and has great sound. He plays effortless and makes everything look easy, but I got ignored when he kept on flipping his volume knobs even when there wasn't 11. He may do part of that for show. Just as when we watch a singer do something over and over again it can be annoying. I don't hate the person or the Playa, just the actions. :salude

Discussing how a guitar (generally) sounds based on such a low quality recording, not even knowing anything about what amp was used, seems risky.

Am I able to - after just listening to this video - tell that the 50th anniversary R9 sounds different than any previous year of production "in general"? No...

As long as many vote Jimmy Page's Telecaster the epitome of Les Paul tone my jury is out whether this is closer to "how a Les Paul should sound" or not.

Nice guitar though.

I must be the odd ball in the bunch because there was nothing about the tone of that guitar that wowed me. Maybe it was the amp possibly not being my cup of tea or the low recording quality, but......:wah

You have to wait 50 years for it to sound right so in 2059 you will get the right tone !! :hee

Eric Clapton's Les Paul wasn't 50 years old when he played Hideaway...

Even if it was the best sounding Historic you ever heard.....doesnt mean the one next to it on the rack, or the one you order, or get delivered from an Ebay seller is going to sound any good.
I bet my left nad that some of the 09's will sound amazing......and some will sound considerably worse than some other comparatively "inacurate" 1994 models.
Im very very interested in the specs......but hearing one that isnt the actual one im buying, doesnt mean shit really :rofl

Same goes for an actual 59', let alone any other manufactured guitar for that matter.

does anyone really expect a difference in SOUND???????
no fuckin way! its still a historic. all changes (and it'll be a LOT) should be cosmetically. I don't know exeactly what they change yet but I know they changed many small things. as far as i know many aftermarket vendors should look out for a new job :)
can't wait til thursday talking to the guys in charge...

I just don't believe that. I believe that the majority of the Historics produced sound great. I've never heard a shitty sounding burst.

I believe they have reached a level of consistency that is much better than it was a few years ago. I hear and see a lot of Historics I'd love to have....07 was a better than average year and I believe the R9's this year will look and sound great. I'm tired of the Gibson haters...I love my R9 and I think Gibson puts out a damn fine guitar.

...im willing to bet that even if the cosmetics have been improved, they wont be so spot on as to stop some of the more fussy of us replacing them with aftermarket parts.
I think those venders can relax :hee

who will be the first one on this board to rip one apart and check for the dreaded 'truss rod condom'?

:wah

As for the sound on that clip?
The whole thing sounded too bright to me. I expect a neck pickup to have that rounded sound I'm used to hearing.
That one sounded like a bridge pickup...then the threw the switch down and it sounded like a tele to me.

As stated before...hard to judge with that type of clip. About the video too, but from what I can see...I like that color. Reminds me of some '60s I've seen.

Better that then it sounding like mud like many new Gibson stock front pickups

...then he threw the switch down and it sounded like a tele to me.

Whats wrong with that? Its probably all amp anyway - some Gibson amps I've played sound like AC-30s and they really brighten up stock Gibson pickups. The real trick is when they sound good with a Marshall.

It's actually pretty easy to do. On the amp, just turn the knob marked "bass" left (counter-clockwise) and turn the knob marked "treble" right (clockwise) :jim

Right!

And that's why I say the 'whole thing' sounds too bright to me.

I'm guessing it's the amp settings too.
