• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

I am biased toward the 56 RI only because the 54RI custom that I owned and all that I have played have been over 10lbs. and I dislike heavy guitars. Most 56's seem to be @9lbs. or less. The 54 custom is a wonderful sounding guitar though and a great value if weight isn't an issue with you. Good luck with whichever you decide on. You can't go wrong with either.

Timeout for some weigh-in info? My '54 Custom RI is a '94 and weighs 8 3/4 pounds. I've also noticed some heavy ones but believe that there is probably a weight spread. Anyone else have weight stats on their '54 Custom RI's?

That's rare, Hamertone!
The 54' custom I had was a bit heavy, as were all that I have played so far.
Also the 54' BBs have many time's a more flat or dull tone. I know there are some KILLER 54' BBs out there, just have not ever found one myself.

So I would go for the R6 over the R4 custom.

Btw I do think the 54 custom is the best looking LP!

Good luck on your project.:dude

Mine's on the heavier side too (although I haven't weighed it so I can't give you exact figures), but mine has a Bigsby and I suspect that's part of the reason.

Hammertone, are you from Steeltown in Canada (affectionately known as "the Hammer" to many of its current and former residents)? I was born & raised there many many years ago...

I'll be picking up a 54 or 57 BB at some point.................but NOT before Gibson starts building them correctly .........1 piece mahogany body NOT 2.

Given that they already (I believe) have a hard time getting enough light mahogany for Historics, somehow I doubt that's ever gonna happen. Custom Shop one-off, maybe.

Old post, but how did this turn from gold top to black beauty.
What i want to know is the difference between the GT’s.

Read the OP post again

Nothing changed. 54 Custom (Black Beauty) vs 56 Gold Top (standard) was the inquiry…20 years ago!
