• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

As for the Staple height, I'm not sure about the Gibson, but if I do bottom out all the staples to floor, tones won't go dark, just less volume and less bite. But clarity of the single coil nature stays all there intact. Just to say. :)

Ya, lowering pickup height has never made a pickup sound darker in my experience. It thins it out, less output less low end. That's the whole reason why people set neck pickups lower, match the output of the bridge and try to cut some mud.

Did this ever get resolved? I’m a Staple/P90/Charlie Christian pickup fan and am curious what he root cause is.

Don't know if this will help or not because I don't have a reissue, but I do have a '72/'54 Limited Edition that I've had since '73 and I don't find mine dark or muddy at all, nor do I think it's Fenderish. In fact, it might be my favorite pup in all my guitars?

I would play around with adjusting the height.

Good luck!

Well of course it's very dark!

Damn thing is black!

Do you expect a white one 'cause the guitar is white?

IS THAT THE QUESTION?
