Anyone notice that some of the bigger online vendors are advertising a 57 Classic "neck" position? Check Musicians Freind and American Music Supply as examples.

Since forever, there has been no specific bridge and neck pickup...I wonder if this is just a typo?

And to add to the confusion, I just bought a set of nickel covered 57 classics and the box they come in has the usual Gibson graphics and merely say "57 Classic" but the vendors UPC label/sticker says "neck position!":hmm

I dunno......it's got me thinking though. I would bet that they are positioning the regular 57 Classic as a "neck" position for the 57 Classic Plus, but the description is misleading for sure..

So I am going to chalk this up to an internal Musicians Freind/American Music Supply labeling issue. The box is the standard Gibby 57 classic box, the sticker that holds it shut says 57 Classic and the blurb on the back of the box states it's suitable for the bridge or neck (as we have all grown to assume.) The UPC sticker (which I assume was not placed on the box by Gibson,) says "neck position."

I sent these guys an email asking why they labeled it that way and received almost incoherent responses off topic, from someone obviously unable to articulate. You would expect them to be eager to correct this, as I am sure it results in unwarranted returns and increased email/phone traffic to thier customer service departemnts.

Is it possible they are now making two versions of the '57 Classic, with different pole spacing, as they do with other pickups?. Like the 490's, where the neck pole spacing is slightly narrower than the bridge?.

That is exactly my concern...I don't want to assume anything. Unfortunately...neither Gibson or the online merchants are able to provide me with a response.

I am leaning towards....there is no "new" model, because the Gibson product box says "57 Classic." "Good for either neck or bridge etc etc" yet the UPC code sticker says "neck position." I don't think that UPC is on the Gibby box if you buy it direct from Gibson, so I think its an MF or AMS internal thing. But I am not sure....and this is driving me crazy.

Well, put it in and rock out. If you can keep from mutilating the wiring ends, you may be able to return them if not up to your specs.

I have 2 57 Classic + p/up's. I put one in the N position, and the other in the B. They both sound great. P/up height and string balancing is more of a concern to me. That is it. Install and tweak to find the sweet spots.

Yeah, it could be their (MF, AMS, etc.) way of keeping the regular '57 Classic and the Classic+ sorted in their warehouse, to avoid shipping errors. I'll bet that's what it is, something pertaining to the seller.

So, I confirmed with Gibson's CS dept. once and for all that there is no such thing as a 57 Classic Neck position pickup, which is what I thought ,but wanted to be sure. So it is indeed an internal labeling issue at certain online vendors.

The might do that to save themselves from having to argue with guys who insist that vintage Gibson neck and bridge humbuckers had different spacing and output!
