Ok i took the gold sunburst style knobs off and put some black
ones on. got the guitar from a guy that bought it in 1970.
he said he played it like 3 times from then to now. he had a
Badass bridge installed shortly after he bought it. I took the
Badass off and put a junky non-original wrap around on.
Probably should try and get an original bridge. but other than
that it's original (well how about those gold knobs? could that
be original? i doubt it.)

Is that what an original pup selector ring should look like for a 58 Special?
The one on my 58 doesn't look like that, however mine is far from original... :-(

Was there a date line on 1958 guitars for the flat switch cover verses the thicker rubber type? I mean did the early models have one type while later guitars had another, or was it random?

I have heard of these anomalies often enough to think maybe they left the factory that way. But, I have never seen an old photo, "from the day" that showed a Junior or Special with the wrong color knobs.
I doubt we will ever know for certain. :)
