• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Another POV....
GC has them here listed at $3699(!), but at least I get to try them now. Not a popular view here, but overall I was a little let down. Still a very nice guitar just not compelling enough of one to get me to sell my '00 GT which was sort of what I was expecting to want to do.

My biggest letdown was the frets...I've got big hands and fingers and and like to play with .10s or .11s and for me, the railroad tie frets on the '99/'00s seem to feel better. I can really dig in. The two new '58s I tried also had a fair amt of filler in the inlays and I just thought the inlays looked cheap and dull in general. The neck shape was perfect, though, and I loved it fatness.

Give me a '99/00 any day. ;)

Well I love the inlays on the '01s and mine are absolutely PERFECT! There's not a hint of filler anywhere - the best I've seen yet.

The frets required a little getting used to. They are about the same as Standard fret width, though a tad lower. I actually quite like them now, as they make for sliding up and down the neck easier. I noticed that when I first got the guitar before I dialed in my setup, they didn't feel as good.

Remember that these guitars usually need the nut filed, action set, truss rod adjusted, etc to play anywhere near their capabilities.

My 01s came out of the box DONE, I didn't have to do shit except junk the 10s. The inlays look like they grew there.

Dude

I think there are inconsistency's across the board on the '58's. The '99, '00 R9's seem to be generally standard. Probably because they didn't make the '58 those years and all they had concentrate on was one model.

Except for a sporactic '58 here and there your best bet is a used or NOS '99, '00 R9. IMO

My general point was that they are noticeably different in feel to me. It's soooo subjective I think one should at least try out a '99/00 before they buy a '01 '58.

So different in fact...someone could easily justify having both I suppose.

I still have yet to try the new frets, so can't say, but I like the ones I have so I'm not just looking to spend some money on LPs.

But,

Does anyone know if the R9 V's (mohogany) have the tall or short frets ?

I don't know Bobby lee, its a tough call. Personally, the frets to me are so damn close I can't believe the anal shit I have been hearing. Rob has 2 of the mohogany Vs, and I bought one from dave's yesterday. Its either the old fret with a rounder profile or the new fret, but seeing that gibson seems to profile them depending on their mood, it could be either and you wouldn't know. I don't have mine home yet to measure them, but even between the new '01 frets and the old frets there is only a stinking .010 difference in height going by my guitars. I'll go from my Y2K lemon burst to my '01 58 and not feel a shit worth a difference. The new binding though IS where you will feel it, its real smooth, but seeing the V doesn't have binding, I really don't think new or old is going to matter. The frets on the mohogany Vs are TOTALLY bigger than the small 58 style they put on the korina Vs, that much I know.

Did the weights vary much on the Vs Dave had for sell ? I been looking at one but will have to get it on approval. I been trying to get as much info 1st.

I played my 98 Explorer (natural mohogany) a lot this past weekend and it has me buzzin for the 59 V, plus I would probably want the 58 Explorer when they issue it in mohogany.

The one Rob bought is lighter than his Korina V, not by a whole lot, but definitely lighter, which makes it pretty damn light considering the Korina is light. They seemed to be all in the same range. I'm waiting for the mahogany explorer myself. I think you'll really like the Vs, they are just incredible, the build quality was just amazing. Rob's TV yellow mahogany V is an animal. The neck on the one I bought is the biggest neck I ever felt on a gibson ever, its damn scary, bordering painfull, it dwarfed my 01 R9 necks. The others were pretty close, so they are all huge in the neck area.
