• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Wildwood 59 335.

This is one of the guitars Greg demoed. I like the tone, very clear and a bit airy. Demo
When I asked about it, Steve also played it and gave me a positive tone report.

It plays really well, the neck is great. The fingerboard reminds me more of ebony in look and feel than rosewood. This is my first 335. Ive never had a guitar with vol/tone knobs that are so responsive.

Ive been playing it through a swart str and it is a bright guitar, definitely cuts through. But part of that might be the celestion blue I put in there still breaking in as it hasnt been in the swart for long. Havent tried it with my kemper yet.

I just dial the brightness down with the tone knob at 5-7.

The vol really opens up from 7-10. Most of the time I keep it around 7.

Oh, and if Gibson had a cologne that smelled like one of their new guitars, I would wear it every day.

Cons:

The bridge pickup measured 6.55 and the neck 7. Wildwood spec uses slightly underwound pickups, but that 6.55 bridge is odd.

The binding isnt perfect. I dont expect it to be though. Really minor stuff. Hard to even photograph, just tiny bumps where it meets the body in a couple places.

I'd like to try different pickups in it eventually.

Well done and I take it it's a '22?
335s are great gats and you can always change the magnets in the pickups to give it a bit more oomph if you want.
I've never played the WW underwound ones so don't know the difference in response or tone.
Congrats and all the best with that blonde beauty (y)

Very nice. I would give the underwound WW pickup some time, and adjust it upward if it is significantly more quiet than the neck pickup. I like them in my R9 and '61 SG RI, but I had to adjust the pickups and individual pole pieces to get them where I wanted, which is not an unusual thing to have to do with a new guitar. My '59 335 RI has the classic 57's in there and they are spanky bright and mid-rangy so the tone knob gets down to 3-4 on the bridge PU for rock. I find the WW Pups to accentuate the lows and highs a bit and therefore the tone knob doesn't have to come down much.

Disclosure - I don't pay much attention to output values, I just use my ears, and I am loathe to go down the PU rabbit hole again.

Great advice thank you.

I will raise the bridge a bit to even the output. It is a bit quieter than the neck.

Today I tried it with the kemper and some of top jimi's profiles and it is absolutely a perfect sounding 335. It was my tube amp making it seem bright. I need to break in the new speaker.

I used marshall profiles, the led zep ones, and it sounds amazing!
