• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Early '61 SG Les Paul with sideways Vibrola. Would it have had the round bottom version of the ABR-1, or flat? I'm talking about the area of the ABR-1 that sits on the thumb wheels. Round rocks back and forth with vibrato use, flat doesn't.

Thanks!

Flat bottom ABR-1 do oscillate on vibrato equiped 60's Gibsons because the thumb-wheels top surface is conical. I don't know the chronology though. Had the first sideways equiped Gibson flat bottom ABR-1 and flat thumb-wheels, then rounded bottom and finally conical thumb-wheels and flat bottom ABR-1 or were the conical thumb-wheels contemporary to the sideways vibrato and the round bottom ABR-1? Any infos are welcome.

My 1960 LP standard with the sideways vibrola has a regular ABR-1, flat bottomed on flat thumbwheels so the bridge does not move. My 1961 LP standard has a regular non wired ABR-1 sitting on domed thumbwheels such that it rocks with the sideways vibrola. So yes the domed or conical wheels were present with the sideways vibrola.
