• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Hey all

I finally took the plunge and bought my first les paul!

For me, i have always been able to play a les paul custom better than a standard. (maybe its the ebony!)

My question to all of you nice folks here is what do I have to do electronically or otherwise to get this guitar sounding its best?

Change caps, pots, or any other general hints.

I think it sounds pretty good now except the birdge 57 classic sounds a little bright without a lot of bottom end to it

thanks
steve

Those are nice. Make sure the pickups are not to close, especially the neck, it will suck the lows from the bridge pickup. By the way, how are these in the weight department? New guitars usually seem bright to me at first , but seem to mellow after a few weeks of playing.

I've tried out a few 68RI Customs, even came close to buying one, and they do seem rather bright and heavy to me. Some more than others.

FUZZY -- The 57's are great but I recommend replacing their Alnico 2 magnets with Alnico 5's. That will warm up the bottom and low-mids without changing the basic tone -- great for classic rock, blues and jazz.

But if you want a heavier/metal sound, go with Gibson 500T for bridge and 496R for neck. Or try some of the heavier Seymour Duncan models -- the other guys here can steer you right, especially RICH.
