• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

I had no intention of spending money when I awoke last Saturday, let alone on anything large. I was on FB when a guy posted some pics on the local guitar-group page and asked if anyone was interested. I immediately messaged him, and by noon it was mine. I asked how much and he said make an offer. I didn't realize I was stealing it for what I paid, but I apparently did.

The three speakers missing magnet covers are Celestion T1221s, the G12M 75 Hz spec, and all date to 4/22/71. Their cones are stamped 102 003, which makes them Pulsonics, the most-sought-after Celestions. The Blackback T1221 dates to 2/27/78 and has the typical 1777 cone. The cab's SN# and specs indicate late 1970 (small gold logo, Basketweave fretcloth) - early 1971 (chipboard back panel), so 1971 is a safe conclusion. It has rested in a road case for many years, thus its condition. I cut out the old wiring, cleaned up the terminals and rewired everything to look like it would've when it left the factory. The first picture of the speakers shows the spaghetti I found inside the cabinet, followed by what my curiosity discovered when I peeled the electrical tape off one of the connections after I was done rewiring. Glad I looked!

I never had any intention of going down the Pulsonic rabbit hole, but I've learned a lot in the last week. I just made a deal for a pair of Pulsonic T1221s 10 days older than those in my cabinet, so now I will be praying for their safe travels from France.

Does it say “Ron” in red crayon inside?
i had one that was beaten. I retolexed 80% of it and put checkerboard cloth on the front. They weigh a ton and are basically a piece of furniture. The 1221 and 003 are numbers I might think of having tatooed. So smooth no matter what you are playing. Sold it in the interest of domestic tranquillity. A 20 watt amp drives it just fine BTW.

Nope, no crayon markings. This one has been in Missouri for many years, apparently, and was all original save for the Blackback and the internal spaghetti. Fantastic sounding cabinet, and no danger of domestic problems; I have a guitar room I built in the basement.

I have a near mint 68 or 69. 100 percent original except for missing casters and wear on bottom only. Should sell it one of these days as I never got the matching head and I won't bother to now.

Nice score!(y)
Looks re-grilled to me and some of the screws for the speakers replaced with hopefully the correct thread type, British 2BA. https://www.marshallforum.com/threads/screws-and-nuts.75948/
What about it makes you think the grillcloth has been replaced? If it's the "dimples" near the top speakers, that's from the padding inside the road case it lived in.

One speaker was obviously changed many years ago, and there are four screws of one type and 12 of another. Minutiae of screws inside the cabinet aren't a concern to me as long as everything is secure. I have to draw the line on my cork-sniffing somewhere, right? ;)

Pretty sure I can actually smell that one! It definitely has an aura.

Yessir. It's been road hard, there's road script of some band name on the back panel but it's way too faded to read. I thought about getting a blacklight just to check it out. Speakers are '69 "T1281" with OG cones. The head, however, is too damn clean.

Because of the excess grill cloth left inside the cab at the top. Marshall wasn't usually so sloppy to leave something like that and would have cut it off at the edge of the baffle. Not knocking you, I think it's nice and would have bought it too. (y)

In what years is the small gold Marshall logo on the cloth present?
Up to early 1970

Up to early 70's

Thanks!
I've been under the impression my B-cab was from 1971 and I couldn't remember why. The cite you linked to re-confirms it's a 1971.
Unprotected corners, metal handles, and the checker-board date it to mid-1971.
However, it came with the small plastic gold (gold on white plastic) Marshall logo. It fell off years ago so I keep it in a parts bin.
It now spends its days in a live-in flight case...alas.

Ok, back to ogling the OP's sweet vintage 4x12!

Why, you dirty son of a... :ROFLMAO:

I appreciate your input, and I wondered about that same thing. The fact that the cloth is the right stuff (I have yet to come across new basketweave cloth that has the correct colors) made me wonder in favor of it being original and, from what I gather of the owner (the guy I met is a friend of his who's liquidating the old guy's gear), I would be surprised if the he would've had the cloth redone; ya never know. Either way, it's been on there a long time and the cab is sexy as heck! For $700, I consider myself very fortunate to be its caretaker until I go the way of all the world and my son gets it.

From the research I did last weekend, my cab matches all of the late-'70 / early-'71 characteristics: small logo and basketweave cloth (through early-'71) and particleboard back ('71). The speaker dates seal it as 1st half of '71.

I think that the logo is wrong and should be gone by early 1970. I edited my last post, it was incorrect and too general.

Ok, I'll bite. Here's two pictures of my 1971 Marshall B 4x12.
It has seen some action!
The metal caster receptacles are worn smooth...
I've long thought that the small gold Marshall logo was a replacement. It fell off a few days after I bought it (20+ years ago).
I've flipped the back panel so the 1/4" jack is up top.
I've had it wired for ~4Ω but it's now 16Ω. I like 4Ω much better.

You got a ripping deal steal regardless of any alterations for $700! (y)(y) I paid 1200 for a very clean '74 bottom cab.

My Stacks, which aren't being used much at this time....:(
The 2 heads are high end clones I built, JTM45 left and JMP50 68 lead spec right. I do have a 73 Super Lead and a 74 50 watt.
Left stack is a 79 on top and 76 bottom, both small check. Right stack is a re-grilled 2000 AX with '78 Black Backs on top and a 74 bottom with cream backs. The AX has added bracing as in the 71 and older cabs.
They all sound pretty ding dang nice! :)

Sounds like we have the same taste in amps! I built mine, too. The purple one is a 68 lead circuit with switchable rectifier and running ~ 436VDC when in diode mode. The black one is a JTM-45 running KT66s. I don't like the sound of matched output tubes, so neither of the amps have matched pairs. I like 'em ~ 6 mA apart.

Where did you get the basketweave cloth you used? Is it old stuff, or current production?
