• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

After hearing this, I think Mick Taylor may be the greatest Bluesbreaker!

Found this last night:

http://tela.sugarmegs.org/_asxtela/

Simply scroll down to the JohnMayall1968-12-04 show (they're all listed alpahbetically) to hear some of the best Les Paul tone ever!

While Clapton set the standard, and Green certainly ran well with the baton, Taylor, IMHO simply took it to the ultimate level at least in the Mayall/Bluesbreakers context.

I used to be able to listen to these streaming, but since I went to the self professed (by MS) "improvement" to WP ver 11, I couldn't, so I uninstalled it and reinstalled ver 9 and now when I click on a Sugarmgs link I get the Sugar Magnolia intro and that's it. I have to download in off hours to listen. I'm going to try ver 10 and see if I can get streaming going again.

Sorry guys-- I wish I were sharp enough to post a direct link to the actual soundfile because this show is certainly worth the time and trouble to pull it up.

I'm in the same boat as Stumbler - too bad.

In the evening, try downloading it as an MP3 and then listen. I can't stream but I can download. Sugermegs only allows downloading in the evening or on weekends.

Very cool site.

He wasn't a Bluesbreaker but was the best Yardbird:

Very cool site. Is it possible to download the stuff instead of just steaming?

The site is inbelieveable. It is a treasure trove. :jim

Yes, you can download MP3s rather than stream, BUT, you have to do it after 5pm EST or on weekends. It's how they manage their bandwidth.

Mick did the greatest body of work with the Bluesbreakers, I think it was 3 albums in all and yes his tone was sublime throughout.

This site is something else....how do you download MP3s from this - I have been able to play these shows using Windows Media Player 11. Any assistance with this issue would greatly appreciated. :dude:

Thanks for this link! Now I wonder if Mick is playing the fabled Sunburst he bought from Keith in 1967? Sounds like it!

I have v11 Media and Vista and it plays them fine. You hit the link and the little Sugarmeg logo pops up with a Windows pop up that asks for permission to play the content. Hit yes and the actual concert loads. The Windows pop up appears again but I didn't click anything, the muisic will just begin and I ignore the pop up. I have v11 Mediaplayer with Vista Business.

Thanks for the alternate link, Stumbler. I was having the same problem...

Yeah, nice tone. Guess, I'm not the biggest Taylor fan, tho'. He always sounds too deliberate and there's something about where he places his notes on the beat that bugs me. Least fave of the three-but I'm glad he gets his props cause he's a great player. :2cool :salude

That sugaree link might only stream after 5pm EST. When I tried to access it this morning I got the "dowmloading prohibited" screen. Maybe on that page after 5pm you can right-click and save-as to download the MP3s. I've done it several times before and it's easy - just at 5 though.

Thanks LHamkin! Nice find. Pretty clean recordings there.

I esp. liked Mick's solo in song #2. Very vintage. Do any of you guys know what his gear and guitar setup was at that time?

I would agree that Taylor is probably the least accomplished player/stylist of the three (Clapton/Green/Taylor) but yes, he did have tone out the wazoo as some people say. I never had any of the Taylor-era Bluesbreakers albums before, but bought the new remasters, and I have spent a lot of time with them. Crusades is literally a catalog of outstanding Gibson/Marshall tones. Must-have for fans of that combination, and that should number quite a few here, shouldn't it?

Taylor gets the credit for being the player who actually made me want to play the guitar! When I first heard his solos on Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out when I was 12, I flipped! I mean, I was literally obsessed with that tone and wicked playing! I just knew instantly there was something special going on there, and I just had to try to channel that for myself. His solos on Stray Cat Blues, Love in Vain and Sympathy for the Devil still make my hair stand up.

Beyond the KeefBurst and a possible JTM45 with a 4x12 celestion cab, who knows? You can hear a bit of wah on this recording as well...
