• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

I have alot of albums. I went to CD's. The price of albums is quite high. If I was thinking about investing in a $25 to $30 album, which album should I buy ,that I will say "boy, forget CD's, I should go back to albums for that great sound. Rock, jazz, world, and blues. I'm 60, so factor that in. Thanks.

A Walk Across The Rooftops released in '84 by Blue Nile.........an epic album and hopefully still available, plenty of sonic subtleties with this one.

Any of the old Vanguard, Biograph or Folkways records. Say Leadbelly , Blind Willie Johnson etc..... Any of those Samuel Charters recordings. It's not the fidelity or anything like that...but those performances jump of the record.......

I'm just talking about albums made today. They tout numbers on how they make the disks. 180 grams? I don't remember as a kid thinking more about the grams then the songs. Well, I did think of grams, just not in albums.
What am my missing?

It’s not one record. Analog is just better period. Even with a few clicks and pops. But make sure the master is from an analog source as a lot of lp’s are pressed from digital sources. In which case just buy the cd.

Not really helpful because of the price range you've quoted ( the last time I looked, and it was years ago, these early pressing - all from year of release, are an arm and a bloody leg ) but I've compared these albums with almost every single re-release in every format, on the same equipment which is nothing special, and even my cloth ears put these out on top. There's just something about them.

If I wanted to buy an album made in 2021 today, these albums won't hold a candle to albums made in 50's and 60's? I guess I'll stick with non poppng cd's.

I like PF's Dark Side of the Moon, to listen to front to back.

I have thousands of vinyl records (LPs, EPs, 45s, 78s) I accumulated. Working as a DJ for over a decade. whatever I bought, I got reimbursed for and could keep, so I took full advantage of that. I also shopped a few large used record stores around the south east and always found some gem for 99 cents somewhere. I went to record shows too. It got so out of hand, people who knew me, would call offering their albums to me when CDs took over. They didnt want to throw them out or take the time to try and sell them. It was the early 2000s, I finally got the last few albums I had been searching for. Stuff had been going out of print fast. One of the albums I was hunting was Jay Ferguson's. I ended up running across two used ones and picked them both up. There was literally nothing else I wanted.

I'm shocked at the prices I see now though and can't speak to a difference in how they are made today.

I love albums. The experience of listening to an album has always been somewhat magical for me. When I was a little kid, I just couldn't stop listening to Pink Floyds the Wall, it takes me to a whole other planet, still does.
If you're looking for something new, awesome and guitar driven, I'd like to plug 2021's Wolffpack by Dewolff.
