• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Am I worthy?

I brought up a similar question last year. Bottom line is, (being all responsible for a moment) if you can afford it without neglecting other obligations, go for it.

If one had to be a certain "level" player to justify a top instrument, there wouldn't be many sold. You'll get years of enjoyment out of cheapest or the most expensive you can afford if it speaks to you and as a home player, makes your playing time more personal and enjoyable.

I sprung for a used Historic goldtop early this year and it's wonderful.

who cares what others think. i'm learning to play really basic learning, but don't care what any other person thinks. own 3 historics and 6 other gibsons. always wanted to learn to play as a kid, parents had no money. so now been lucky to have a good business to purchase these guitars. i will always be a basement player literally.... but my gear will continue to grow, love to shop and buy. actually considering my next purchase ptp [ 18 watt marshall combo].. then after that etc etc etc

I can relate. The first electric guitar I ever bought was a pre-owned LP Studio. Well, I just sold that guitar about ten minutes ago for about what I paid for it. The guy got a good deal and I'm happy for him. You could see the excitement in his eyes.
I'm also an at-home player and in the last couple of years I've acquired some great gear. Don't worry about being worthy. I think better gear can improve your playing and your understanding of music. My R9 is immeasurably better than the Studio I just sold. It's easier to play, it sounds better, and it gets me much closer to the music in my head. Remember: playing a great guitar through a great amp can change the way you play.
Give it a try. If it doesn't work out, you can always sell quality gear.
Buy from Forum dealers. You won't regret it.

I came out of nowhere (20 years in the acoustic noodling homebound universe) to buy myself a CS 356 last year, and I say the heck with "worthy".

Do NOT discount the amazing effects of having a truly inspiring instrument in your midst. You'll be worthy soon enough. I aspire to deserve the thing every day, and work harder at that than I ever have because its there.

I got talking to Doyle Dykes a few years ago and he gave me two pieces of advice that will stay with me:

First, music is a gift that should be shared whenever possible. Playing for other people is truly rewarding, do it when you get the opportunity.

Second, don't break the bank, but buy the best instrument(s) you can afford, they will inspire you to play better than you do now.

If you are passionate, buy the best you can afford--and enjoy it!

Besides, it can never be a waste of money if you take care of the guitar. It will retain its value.

If it isn't going to put you or your family in hock, I say do it. Even when I'm not playing so well, looking down while I play at some serious flamed maple and gleaming pickup covers under the lamp light in the evening cheers me up, transports me.

as long as you can afford it and keep your bills paid and provide for your family then you should get it. if that makes you happy go for it. i have 10 guitars and 2 amps and i cant play that good but i enjoy playing so thats all i need to justify my purchases. i will buy whatever i want as long as i can afford it.

I've amassed my collection of gear for precisely the opposite reason you're looking for justification. Because my career time constraints has taken me away from the possibility of "playing out" I've appeased myself with some toys that remind me of the Rock n Roll fantasy I once yearned for. If I were that "starving artist" I'd probably never afford it.

Lack of talent didn't stop me!
Get the guitar you have always wanted. For me it was a Historic Les Paul 1958 reissue. I had talked myself out of buying a great guitar for years. I always had an excuse. Some good excuses like lack of funds, saving for a house, doctor bills (etc) and some not-so-good like "I don't play out"..."I'm not good enough yet"..."These Korean made guitars are not half bad"... :lol2.
I was now over 40 yerars old. I had wanted a Les Paul my whole life. The house was bought and the kids were getting a little older. I felt it was time. I finally treated myself to my "dream" guitar and could not be happier. Oh, one other important thing. Once you get your hands on a quality instrument you may just find you play more often and enjoy the experience much more. I used to bang around on my Korean made guitar...now I am making music on my Les Paul!
Do yourself a favor. Commit to buying it then patiently search out the one that "does it" for you and BUY IT! Don't cheat yourself out of the experience and a chance to enjoy what the good Lord has blessed you with the ability to do- make music!
You are most certainly worthy of that.

The inspiration that comes from playing an instrument that is "the one" can take you to places that you may otherwise never have considered going to.

If you can swing it, get it :wail

I have what might seem to be a stupid question. I've been playing guitar for over 25 years now and can afford to buy a real nice guitar. The problem is I'm not really that good of a player and only play for my own enjoyment. I don't plan on playing in a band, on stage or anywhere else other than my home. My conundrum if you will is I feel unworthy of a better guitar than my Studio model. Is it right for a guy like me to purchase an extraordinary guitar when there are others who make a living at this and can't attain the so called holy grail and deserve it more?

I have a few great low end guitars that keep me happy for the most part but I long for the "ONE". What do you guys think, am I right to feel this way?

Well you know those douche's from Linkin' Park use PRS guitars and they are horrible! You have to be better than those guys so get yourself something nice!

Ask yourself these two questions, can I afford it?, will it make me happy? If the answer to both questions is yes, then you deserve it. Treat yourself and enjoy!

If you're going to honor, cherish and love it, it can't be wrong.

.....so what's it going to be: "to buy, or not to buy?"
