• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Amp Find - Does anyone have any experience with custom-ordered Peavy ODS amps?

I found this amp at a Guitar Center. It was marked as being a modified Peavey Classic. I got it for just over $400 because it had been sitting there for a while and I had a whole bunch of Guitar Center reward points I had been saving.

A little more research and I was told this is a pre-production prototype of a series of amplifiers Peavey made for a very short time. Apparently, they tried to do a custom-order amp line based on the Dumble ODS. They were all hand built by a guy named Tim Jauernig. Later versions of this were sold as the Masterpiece 50.

From what I read you could order an off-the-shelf version or they would build you exactly what you want. Prices started at about $3000 and everything is supposed to be high quality.

I was wondering if anyone has owned one of these or played one. I had a Dumble combo for a while and really liked it, although it wasn't my go-to amplifier. I'm still really good friends with the guy to who I sold mine but he moved to Italy recently, so I can't put them side by side. I'm interested to see how this one stacks up. I'll probably try it through my JCM-900 cab because it has EVs in it and that's what my Dumble had. If it sounds better that way I'll put one in here or maybe the stock one is fine.

I'm friends with Tag and Shad so maybe they can give me their thoughts as well.

Anyway, any info is welcome but I wanted to share this odd piece of Peavey history:

I got it today. Out of the box it was acting funny but one of the preamp tubes was bad. It would drop out to a low volume then come back.

I'll try to make a video soon, the HVAC system in my studio is getting totally replaced this Monday then we have Thanksgiving, etc.... I can tell you it definitely has that Dumble flavor. My old combo had an EV in it and this has a Celestion, so I may try to find an EV just to test it out.

I'm really happy with it. I can tell you it doesn't look or feel like any Peavey amp I've ever seen. Not putting Peavey down at all, just this doesn't seem like something made there. I do think it needs to be biased a little bit up, but I need to figure out what it should be biased at, to begin with. RIght now, using the rear test points it's at about 24, which seems low for 6L6. Hopefully I'll get a response from Peavey.
