I got a bridge pickup in the mail today. It is labeled 8.51 however,
it reads 8.62. Hey, I am not complaining at all. Does this happen often?

On every single pickup ever made. It's the temperature of the room.

The cooler copper gets, the less resistance to electric current it provides. The warmer it gets, the more resistance it gives. I don't know what amount per degree or whatever, but your reading variances are probabyl due entirely to that.

Ok

So at what temperature do they take the reading?

Your right I cooled it off and it read much lower.

Make sure your meter is calibrated correctly, too.

If you ever wax-dip your pickups, put the meter on it while it is in the wax, a 8.5k pickup in hot wax will jump to over 10 or 11K when submerged.

have no idea what temperature they use to standardize the readings. i suspect that most people outside of Duncan don't standardize them at all.

And what Davbe's talking about really happens- but it's only temporary.
